This settlement, whose name perhaps means “barren place” (from ʿrh, “lay bare”), is listed among the towns within the tribal allotment of Judah (Josh

Maarathmāʹə-rath [Heb. maʿaraṯ; Gk. B Magarōth, A Marōth]. A city in the hill country of Judah, mentioned between Gedor and Beth-anoth and along with Halhul, Beth-zur, and Eltekon (Josh. 15:59). The reading in B with gamma suggests an original ghain (cf. Lucian Maarōth), but A reads as though
