Judah on the East
Excerpt from the Lexham Bible Dictionary, the most advanced Bible dictionary.
The description of the territory allotted to the tribe of Naphtali in Josh 19:32–39 indicates the boundary of their territory reaches “to Judah, the Jordan on the east” (Josh 19:34). This reference to Judah appears out of place because the territory of Judah is far to the south of the areas allotted to Zebulun, Asher, and Naphtali. Naphtali’s eastern border was the Sea of Galilee and the Jordan River north of there. The phrase may be a textual corruption in the Masoretic Text. The Septuagint reads “toward the sea, and the Jordan on the east” (κατὰ θάλασσαν, kata thalassan, καὶ ὁ Ιορδάνης ἀπʼ ἀνατολῶν ἡλίου, kai ho Iordanēs apʼ anatolōn hēliou). Alternatively, the Hebrew text could be alluding to territory in the northern part of Canaan that was inhabited by people from the tribe of Judah. However, this possibility derives primarily from the claim in 1 Chr 2:21–23 that Jair, a son of Manasseh who conquered territory in the Transjordan (Num 32:41), was a Judahite on his father’s side.

Judah on the EastA place marking the eastern limit of the territory of Naphtali (Josh. 19:34). It is generally thought among scholars that the text is corrupt (cf. the LXX, which omits any reference to Judah, and many modern versions, e.g., NIV, JB, NAB); but no very probable emendation has been suggested.

Judah upon JordanThe Authorized Version, following the Vulgate, has this rendering in Josh. 19:34.
