John (father of Peter)
Excerpt from the Lexham Bible Dictionary, the most advanced Bible dictionary.
The father of Simon Peter, named only in relation to Peter in John 1:42; 21:15–17, and Matt 16:17. Simon Peter’s father was named either John or Jonah. The references in the Gospel of John call him John (Ἰωάννης, Iōannēs), but in Matt 16:17, Peter is called Bar-Jonah (Βαριωνᾶ, Bariōna), meaning “son of Jonah” (“bar” is Aramaic for “son”). This may reflect two different traditions about the name of Peter’s father since in Hebrew, Jonah (יוֹנָה‎, yonah) and John (יְהוֹחָנָן‎, yehochanan; or יוֹחָנָן‎, yochanan) are two different names. In Greek, however, Jonah (Ἰωνᾶς, Iōnas) and John (Ἰωάννης, Iōannēs) are very similarly spelled. In fact, some important Greek manuscripts (including Codex Alexandrinus) spell the name of Peter’s father as Ιωνα (Iōna) at John 1:42 and John 21:15–17 while still spelling the name John elsewhere in the book as Ἰωάννης (Iōannēs) (e.g., John 1:6). This textual variation suggests Jonah in Matt 6:17 could be the correct name for Peter’s father. It is also possible that John/Jonah simply had two names, much like Barnabas/Joseph and Saul/Paul.
