Jether (commander)
Excerpt from the Lexham Bible Dictionary, the most advanced Bible dictionary.
Father of Amasa, the commander of Absalom’s army (2 Sam 17:25; compare 1 Kgs 2:5). Jether was married to Abigail, a sister of David (1 Chr 2:13–17). In 2 Samuel 17:25, Abigail’s husband and the father of Amasa is named as “Ithra the Israelite” (יִתְרָא הַיִּשְׂרְאֵלִי‎, yithra' hayyisre'eliy), but 1 Chr 2:17 calls him “Jether the Ishmaelite” (יֶ֖תֶר הַיִּשְׁמְעֵאלִֽי‎, yether hayyishme'eliy). This variation is likely a scribal error in 2 Sam 17:25 since labeling a native Israelite within Israel as “the Israelite” would not be helpful for identification. Gentilic labels, like “the Ishmaelite,” serve the purpose of distinguishing people with the same name (e.g., “Elijah the Tishbite” in 1 Kgs 17:1 or “Uriah the Hittite” in 2 Sam 11:3).
