ILAI (PERSON) [Heb ʿı̂lay (עִילַי)]. An Ahohite who was one of David’s warriors (1 Chr 11:29). Since his name parallels that of Zalmon the Ahohite in 2 Sam 23:28, it is possible that Ilai is actually a corruption of the Hebrew ṣı̂lay, which may be a diminutive form of Zalmon. 1. Son of Nahshon and father of Boaz the husband of Ruth (Ruth 4:20f.; 1 Ch. 2:11); thus an ancestor of David and also of Joseph the father of Jesus (Mt. 1:4f.; Lk. 3:32). According to Matthew’s genealogy Salmon married Rahab and became the father of Boaz by her (Mt. 1:5).
