HILLEL THE ELDER, HOUSE OF HILLEL. Hillel the Elder lived in the early 1st cent. ce and was a forebear of the rabbinic movement. Hillel was not called by the later designation rabbi (see RABBI, RABBONI), but was titled “elder” (zaqen זָקֵן), as were his contemporaries Shammai and Gamaliel. In later centuries,
