The military forces serving under Herodian Dynasty kings. These soldiers were present in various parts of Palestine during much of the period from 39 bcad 97. Herodian forces differed from Roman troops. They primarily suppressed internal unrest and seldom engaged in battle with foreign armies. According to New Testament accounts, a Herodian executioner beheaded John the Baptist. Jesus’ crucifixion, however, was conducted by Roman forces.
