Hassophereth
Excerpt from the Lexham Bible Dictionary, the most advanced Bible dictionary.
Also called Hassophereth. An ancestor of a family of Solomon’s servants (Ezra 2:55; Neh 7:57). The name likely originated as a title designating the official office of the court scribe. The word is related to the noun for “scribe” (סֹפֵר‎, sopher). The spelling “Hassophereth,” used in Ezra 2:55, includes the Hebrew definite article (e.g., “the scribal office”). The term was probably used to refer to the one holding the scribal office and, over time, came to be used as a proper name.
