Girgashites
Excerpt from the Lexham Bible Dictionary, the most advanced Bible dictionary.
A people group who were Canaanites, descendants of Ham and inhabitants of Canaan (Gen 10:15–16; 15:19–21; 1 Chr 1:13–14).Of all the lists of Canaanites in the land at the time of the Israelite conquest, the Girgashites are included only in the lists in Deut 7:1; Josh 3:10, 24:11; and Neh 9:8. The Septuagint, but not the Masoretic Text, includes them also in Exod 23:23, 33:2, 34:11; and Josh 9:1. Little is known about the Girgashites, including their geographical position. The tradition of their inhabiting the land might be preserved in the word “Gergesenes” in some manuscripts of Matt 8:28; Mark 5:1; and Luke 8:26. However, the New Testament region of the Gergesenes is east of the Sea of Galilee, whereas the Old Testament Girgashites were west of the Jordan.
