Ephraim (Person)
EPHRAIM (PERSON) [Heb ʾeprayim (אֶפְרַיִם)]. EPHRAIMITES. The second son of the biblical patriarch Joseph, and the eponymous ancestor of the tribe bearing this name. The central hill country of Palestine was called Ephraim after the tribe associated with that region. This entry consists of two articles,

Ephraim (Person)
Ephraim (Person). Joseph’s younger son, born of Joseph and Asenath before the 7 years of famine in Egypt (Gn 41:52). He was the ancestor of an Israelite tribe, and his name came to designate the northern kingdom of Israel (Is 7:5, 8; Jer 31:18, 20; Hos 5:3, 5). Ephraim’s boyhood overlapped the last 17

Ephraim
Ephraim (ee´fray-im; Heb., probably “fruitful place”; note Gen. 41:52 for a popular etymology).1 Joseph’s younger son born in Egypt to Asenath. Ephraim was blessed by Jacob (Gen. 48:1–20) and favored over his brother Manasseh, portending the ascendancy of the Ephraimite tribe.2 An increasingly prominent

Ephraim
EPHRAIM. The name “Ephraim” is built upon a root meaning “to be fruitful” (Gen 41:52). Its dual form and prophecies added by Jacob (Gen 48:19) and Moses (Deut 33:17) indicate great fruitfulness.1. The son of Joseph. The name was given by Joseph to his second son (Gen 46:20). Both sons were adopted by

Ephraim
EPHRAIM. The second son of Joseph, born to him by Asenath, the daughter of Potipherah, before the years of famine came (Gn. 41:50–52). The sick Jacob acknowledged the two sons of Joseph (Gn. 48:5), blessing Ephraim with his right hand and Manasseh with his left (vv. 13–14), thus signifying that Ephraim

EPHRAIM [ēˊfrĭ əm] (Heb. ˒ep̱rayim, from pārâ “be fruitful”; Gk. Ephraim) (PERSON). The second son of Joseph and Asenath, and the eponymous ancestor of a tribe by the same name; as with other similar figures, it is frequently difficult to determine whether the individual or the social group is

Ephraim
EPHRAIM The second son of Joseph by Asenath and the ancestor of the tribe of Ephraim. Ephraim was born in Egypt (Gen 41:52; 46:20). In giving his blessing to the sons of Joseph, Jacob adopted both Ephraim and Manasseh as his own, but he preferred the younger Ephraim to his older brother (Gen 48:14–16).

Ephra-im
E´phra-im (double fruitfulness), the second son of Joseph by his wife Asenath. (b.c. 1715–1708.) The first indication we have of that ascendency over his elder brother Manasseh which at a later period the tribe of Ephraim so unmistakably possessed is in the blessing of the children by Jacob. Gen. 48.
