DUR SHARRUKIN A city in northern Mesopotamia, about 10 miles to the north of Nineveh, built by Sargon II of Assyria as his northern capital, on the site of a small village (713 bc). Its ground plan is square and measures about 5,300 feet by 5,100 feet. It was oriented to the cardinal points of the compass
