Dan, Tribe of
Dan, Tribe of (דָּן‎, dan; Δάν, Dan). One of the twelve tribes of Israel. Takes its name from the fifth son of Jacob by Rachel’s maidservant, Bilhah (Gen 30:1–6).

DAN, TRIBE OF — the tribe of Dan, descended from the son of Jacob. This tribe never lived up to its promise. The area allotted to Dan included the towns of Aijalon, Ekron, Eltekeh, and Zorah in the west central part of Canaan (Josh. 19:40–46; 21:5, 23–24) and stretched to Joppa on the Mediterranean Sea.

Dan [Dan](Hebrew origin: Judge)(Genesis 30:6). 17th century b.c. Dan, the ancestor of the tribe of Dan, was the eldest of the two sons—the other was Naphtali—whom Bilhah, Rachel’s maid, had with Jacob. His mother had been given, as a wedding gift, by Laban to his daughter Rachel, when she married Jacob.
