A village eventually assigned to the tribe of Benjamin (Josh 18:26). Its inhabitants, along with the Gibeonites, deceived Israel into thinking that they were from a distant country and thus made a peace treaty with the Israelites before the conquest of Canaan (Josh 9:17). The city’s inhabitants are listed among the returnees after the exile (Ezra 2:25; Neh 7:29).
