Named after the priestly scribe Ezra, referred to in Ezra 7–10, Neh 8, and Neh 12. The book of Ezra describes the exiles’ return, the temple’s restoration, and the institution of the law during the Persian Period (550–332 bc). The books of Ezra and Nehemiah were originally a single work.
