SEAT, CHIEF. The protokathedria, the “chief seat” in the synagogue (q.v.), is noted once in Matthew and in Mark, and twice in Luke, there translated “uppermost seats” (11:43) and “highest seats” (20:46). It is separate and distinct from “chief place” (protoklisia). Both words occur in Mt 23:6; Mk 12:39;
