Ashurites ashʹar-īts [Heb. hā-’ašûrî]; NEB ASHERITES. According to the MT of 2 S. 2:9, a tribe located between Gilead and Jezreel, which was included in the short-lived kingdom of Saul’s son Ishbosheth. There is some question as to the accuracy of the text here, with the Targum reading “Asherites”

ASHURITES. A tribe in northern Israel, located between Gilead and Jezreel, part of the realm of Ishbosheth (2 Sam 2:9). Many follow the Targum emendation, reading this name as the men of Asher (cf. Jdg 1:32). It could hardly be the Asshurim of Gen 25:3, for these were a tribe in northern Arabia.
