Aristobulus (grandson of Aristobulus)

Son of Aristobulus II‘s son Alexander and brother of Herod the Great‘s wife Mariamme. A member of the Hasmonean family, Aristobulus III (53–35 bc) was installed as high priest at the age of 17 through the machinations of his mother, Alexandra. Herod felt threatened by the popular Aristobulus, and had him drowned in a pool at Jericho (Josephus, Antiquities 15:53–56; Jewish War 1.437).
