APHIAH (PERSON) [Heb ʾăpı̂aḥ (אֲפִיחַ)]. The ancestor of Saul ben Kish, the first King of Israel (1 Sam 9:1). The name may mean “sooty” (McCarter 1 Samuel AB, 168) or, alternatively, “large foreheaded” (IPN, 227). LXXA offers the variant form Aphech, which presumes a final qop instead of a final ḥet.
