Born at Hebron to David’s wife Ahinoam of Jezreel (2 Sam 3:2; 1 Chr 3:1). The oldest son of David. He fell in love with his half-sister Tamar, the sister of Absalom. Amnon raped Tamar after Jonadab told him to pretend to be ill and ask for Tamar to care for him. He sent her away in disgrace, and Absalom took her in. Two years later, Absalom invited Amnon and the rest of David’s sons to the sheepshearing, and at Absalom’s command, the servants killed Amnon when he was drunk (2 Sam 13:1–29).
