Achish in 1 Kings

First Kings records that, early in the reign of Solomon, “two of Shimei’s slaves ran away to King Achish son of Maacah of Gath” (1 Kgs 2:39–41 ESV). It is debated whether the Achish mentioned here is the same individual who reigned during the time of Saul. First Kings may refer to a later Philistine king of the same name—perhaps a descendant of the other Achish (Gray, 1 & 2 Kings, 111; compare Wiseman, 1 and 2 Kings, 80). However, Kassis and Leithart argue that this could be the same Achish who is still reigning in Gath more than 40 years after the events with David (e.g., Kassis, “Gath,” 268, or Leithart, 1 & 2 Kings, 39).
