A Maskil of Asaph.g
listen to the words from my mouth.h
I will speak mysteries from the pasti—
and that our ancestors have passed down to us.j
but will tell a future generation
the praiseworthy acts of the Lord,
his might, and the wondrous works
he has performed.k
and set up a law in Israel,
which he commanded our ancestors
to teach to their childrenl
children yet to be born—might know.
They were to rise and tell their childrenm
and not forget God’s works,
but keep his commands.n
a stubborn and rebellious generation,
a generation whose heart was not loyal
and whose spirit was not faithful to God.o
on the day of battle.p
and refused to live by his law.q
the wondrous works he had shown them.r
in the land of Egypt, the territory of Zoan.s
the water stood firm like a wall.t
and with a fiery light throughout the night.u
and gave them drink as abundant as the depths.v
and made water flow down like rivers.w
rebelling in the desert against the Most High.x
18 They deliberatelyA tested God,
demanding the food they craved.y
“Is God able to provide food in the wilderness?
But can he also provide bread
or furnish meat for his people?”aa
then fire broke out against Jacob,
and anger flared up against Israelab
or rely on his salvation.ac
and opened the doors of heaven.ad
he gave them grain from heaven.ae
He sent them an abundant supply of food.af
and drove the south wind by his might.ag
all around the tents.a
for he gave them what they craved.b
while the food was still in their mouths,
and he killed some of their best men.
He struck down Israel’s fit young men.c
and did not believe his wondrous works.d
their years in sudden disaster.e
the rest began to seek him;
they repented and searched for God.f
the Most High God, their Redeemer.g
they lied to him with their tongues,h
and they were unfaithful to his covenant.i
he atoned for their iniquity
and did not destroy them.
He often turned his anger aside
a wind that passes and does not return.k
in the wilderness
and grieved him in the desert.
41 They constantly tested Godl
and provoked the Holy One of Israel.m
on the day he redeemed them from the foe,n
and his wonders in the territory of Zoan.o
and they could not drink from their streams.p
45 He sent among them swarms of flies,q
which fed on them,
and frogs, which devastated them.r
and the fruit of their labor to the locust.s
and their sycamore fig trees with a flood.
and their cattle to lightning bolts.t
fury, indignation, and calamity—
He did not spare them from death
but delivered their lives to the plague.v
51 He struck all the firstbornw in Egypt,
the first progeny of the tents of Ham.x
and guided them like a flock in the wilderness.y
but the sea covered their enemies.z
to the mountain his right hand acquired.aa
55 He drove out nations before them.ab
He apportioned their inheritance by lot
and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.ac
for they did not keep his decrees.ad
they became warped like a faulty bow.ae
and provoked his jealousy with their carved images.a
he completely rejected Israel.b
the tent where he resided among mankind.c
and his splendor to the hand of a foe.d
because he was enraged with his heritage.e
and the widows could not lament.g
like a warrior from the effects of wine.h
he gave them lasting disgrace.i
and did not choose the tribe of Ephraim.
Mount Zion, which he loved.j
like the earth that he established forever.k
and took him from the sheep pens;l
to be shepherd over his people Jacob—
over Israel, his inheritance.m
and guided them with his skillful hands.n
About Christian Standard Bible
The Christian Standard Bible (CSB) is a highly trustworthy, faithful translation that is proven to be the optimal blend of accuracy and readability. It’s as literal to the original as possible without sacrificing clarity. The CSB is poised to become the translation that pastors rely on and Bible readers turn to again and again to read and to share with others.
The CSB is an original translation: more than 100 scholars from 17 denominations translated directly from the best available Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic source texts into English. Its source texts are the standard used by scholars and seminaries today.
The CSB is trustworthy: the conservative, evangelical scholars of the CSB affirm the authority of Scripture as the inerrant Word of God and seek the highest level of faithfulness to the original and accuracy in their translation. These scholars and LifeWay, the non-profit ministry that stewards the CSB, also champion the Bible against cultural trends that would compromise its truths.
The CSB is clear: it is as literal a translation of the ancient source texts as possible, but, in the many places throughout Scripture where a word-for-word rendering might obscure the meaning for a modern audience, it uses a more dynamic translation. In all cases, the intent is to convey the original meaning of God’s Word as faithfully and as clearly as possible.
