HEZEKIAH’S COLLECTION

25 These too are proverbs of Solomon,f

which the men of King Hezekiahg of Judah copied.

It is the glory of God to conceal a matterh

and the glory of kings to investigate a matter.

As the heavens are high and the earth is deep,

so the hearts of kings cannot be investigated.

Remove impurities from silver,i

and material will be produced* for a silversmith.B,j

Remove the wicked from the king’s presence,k

and his throne will be established in righteousness.l

Don’t boast about yourself before the king,

and don’t stand in the place of the great;

for it is better for him to say to you, “Come up here!”

than to demote you in plain view of a noble.C,m

Don’t take a matter to court hastily.n

Otherwise, what will you do afterward

if your opponent* humiliates you?

Make your case with your opponent

without revealing another’s secret;o

10 otherwise, the one who hears will disgrace you,

and you’ll never live it down.E

11 A word spoken at the right time

is like gold apples in silver settings.p

12 A wise correction to a receptive earq

is like a gold ring or an ornament of gold.

13 To those who send him, a trustworthy envoy

is like the coolness of snow on a harvest day;

he refreshes the life of his masters.r

14 The one who boasts about a gift that does not exist

is like clouds and wind without rain.s

15 A ruler can be persuaded through patience,

and a gentle tongue can break a bone.t

16 If you find honey,u eat only what you need;

otherwise, you’ll get sick from it and vomit.v

17 Seldom set foot in your neighbor’s house;

otherwise, he’ll get sick of you and hate you.

18 A person giving false testimony against his neighborw

is like a club, a sword, or a sharp arrow.x

19 Trusting an unreliable person in a difficult time

is like a rotten tooth or a faltering foot.a

20 Singing songs to a troubled heart

is like taking off clothing on a cold day

or like pouring vinegar on soda.A,b

21 If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat,

and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink,c

22 for you will heap burning coals on his head,

and the Lord will reward you.d

23 The north wind produces rain,

and a backbiting tongue, angry looks.

24 Better to live on the corner of a roof

than to share a house with a nagging wife.e

25 Good news from a distant land

is like cold water to a parched throat.B,f

26 A righteous person who yields to the wickedg

is like a muddied spring or a polluted well.h

27 It is not good to eat too much honeyi

or to seek glory after glory.C,j

28 A person who does not control his temperk

is like a city whose wall is broken down.l

CSB

About Christian Standard Bible

The Christian Standard Bible (CSB) is a highly trustworthy, faithful translation that is proven to be the optimal blend of accuracy and readability. It’s as literal to the original as possible without sacrificing clarity. The CSB is poised to become the translation that pastors rely on and Bible readers turn to again and again to read and to share with others.

The CSB is an original translation: more than 100 scholars from 17 denominations translated directly from the best available Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic source texts into English. Its source texts are the standard used by scholars and seminaries today.

The CSB is trustworthy: the conservative, evangelical scholars of the CSB affirm the authority of Scripture as the inerrant Word of God and seek the highest level of faithfulness to the original and accuracy in their translation. These scholars and LifeWay, the non-profit ministry that stewards the CSB, also champion the Bible against cultural trends that would compromise its truths.

The CSB is clear: it is as literal a translation of the ancient source texts as possible, but, in the many places throughout Scripture where a word-for-word rendering might obscure the meaning for a modern audience, it uses a more dynamic translation. In all cases, the intent is to convey the original meaning of God’s Word as faithfully and as clearly as possible.
