FIRST VISION: LOCUSTS

The Lord God showed me this: He was forming a swarm of locustsp at the time the spring crop first began to sprout—after the cutting of the king’s hay. When the locusts finished eating the vegetation of the land,q I said, “Lord God, please forgive!r How will Jacob survive since he is so small?”s

The Lord relented concerning this.t “It will not happen,” he said.

SECOND VISION: FIRE

The Lord God showed me this: The Lord God was calling for a judgment by fire.u It consumed the great deep and devoured the land. Then I said, “Lord God, please stop!v How will Jacob survive since he is so small?”

The Lord relented concerning this.w “This will not happen either,” said the Lord God.

THIRD VISION: A PLUMB LINE

He showed me this: The Lord was standing there by a vertical wall with a plumb line in his hand. The Lord asked me, “What do you see, Amos?”x

I replied, “A plumb line.”

Then the Lord said, “I am setting a plumb line among my people Israel;y I will no longer spare them:z

Isaac’s high placesaa will be deserted,

and Israel’s sanctuaries will be in ruins;ab

I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam

with a sword.”

AMAZIAH’S OPPOSITION

10 Amaziah the priestac of Bethel sent word to King Jeroboam of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against youad right here in the house of Israel. The land cannot endure all his words, 11 for Amos has said this: ‘Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will certainly go into exile from its homeland.’ ”ae

12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Go away, you seer!af Flee to the land of Judah. Earn your livingG and give your prophecies there, 13 but don’t ever prophesyag at Bethel again, for it is the king’s sanctuaryah and a royal temple.”

14 So Amos answered Amaziah, “I wasH not a prophet or the son of a prophet;I,ai rather, I wasH a herdsman,aj and I took care of sycamore figs. 15 But the Lord took me from following the flockak and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’ ”al

16 Now hear the word of the Lord. You say:

Do not prophesyam against Israel;

do not preachan against the house of Isaac.

17 Therefore, this is what the Lord says:

Your wife will be a prostitute in the city,a

your sons and daughters will fall by the sword,b

and your land will be divided up

with a measuring line.

You yourself will die on paganA soil,c

and Israel will certainly go into exiled

from its homeland.

About Christian Standard Bible

The Christian Standard Bible (CSB) is a highly trustworthy, faithful translation that is proven to be the optimal blend of accuracy and readability. It’s as literal to the original as possible without sacrificing clarity. The CSB is poised to become the translation that pastors rely on and Bible readers turn to again and again to read and to share with others.

The CSB is an original translation: more than 100 scholars from 17 denominations translated directly from the best available Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic source texts into English. Its source texts are the standard used by scholars and seminaries today.

The CSB is trustworthy: the conservative, evangelical scholars of the CSB affirm the authority of Scripture as the inerrant Word of God and seek the highest level of faithfulness to the original and accuracy in their translation. These scholars and LifeWay, the non-profit ministry that stewards the CSB, also champion the Bible against cultural trends that would compromise its truths.

The CSB is clear: it is as literal a translation of the ancient source texts as possible, but, in the many places throughout Scripture where a word-for-word rendering might obscure the meaning for a modern audience, it uses a more dynamic translation. In all cases, the intent is to convey the original meaning of God’s Word as faithfully and as clearly as possible.
