Matthew 15:3–11

He answered and said to them, Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? For God commanded, saying, cHonor your father and your mother; and, dHe who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’ But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, eWhatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to Godthen he need not honor his father 1or mother.’ Thus you have made the 2commandment of God of no effect by your tradition. fHypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying:

8 These gpeople 3draw near to Me with their mouth,

And honor Me with their lips,

But their heart is far from Me.

9 And in vain they worship Me,

hTeaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ”

10 iWhen He had called the multitude to Himself, He said to them, Hear and understand: 11 jNot what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.”

Matthew 15:3–11 — The New International Version (NIV)

Jesus replied, And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother andAnyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’ But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother isdevoted to God,’ they are not tohonor their father or motherwith it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:

“ ‘These people honor me with their lips,

but their hearts are far from me.

They worship me in vain;

their teachings are merely human rules.

10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, Listen and understand. 11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”

Matthew 15:3–11 — English Standard Version (ESV)

He answered them, And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? For God commanded, Honor your father and your mother,’ and, Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,” he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God. You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said:

“ ‘This people honors me with their lips,

but their heart is far from me;

in vain do they worship me,

teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ”

10 And he called the people to him and said to them, Hear and understand: 11 it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.”

Matthew 15:3–11 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

10 And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: 11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.

Matthew 15:3–11 — New Living Translation (NLT)

Jesus replied, And why do you, by your traditions, violate the direct commandments of God? For instance, God says, ‘Honor your father and mother,’ andAnyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’ But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’ In this way, you say they don’t need to honor their parents. And so you cancel the word of God for the sake of your own tradition. You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote,

These people honor me with their lips,

but their hearts are far from me.

Their worship is a farce,

for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’

10 Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. Listen,” he said, and try to understand. 11 It’s not what goes into your mouth that defiles you; you are defiled by the words that come out of your mouth.”

Matthew 15:3–11 — New Century Version (NCV)

Jesus answered, “And why do you refuse to obey God’s command so that you can follow your own teachings? God said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and ‘Anyone who says cruel things to his father or mother must be put to death.’ But you say a person can tell his father or mother, ‘I have something I could use to help you, but I have given it to God already.’ You teach that person not to honor his father or his mother. You rejected what God said for the sake of your own rules. You are hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he said about you:

‘These people show honor to me with words,

but their hearts are far from me.

Their worship of me is worthless.

The things they teach are nothing but human rules.’ ”

10 After Jesus called the crowd to him, he said, “Listen and understand what I am saying. 11 It is not what people put into their mouths that makes them unclean. It is what comes out of their mouths that makes them unclean.”

Matthew 15:3–11 — American Standard Version (ASV)

And he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? For God said, Honor thy father and thy mother: and, He that speaketh evil of father or mother, let him die the death. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, That wherewith thou mightest have been profited by me is given to God; he shall not honor his father. And ye have made void the word of God because of your tradition. Ye hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying,

This people honoreth me with their lips;

But their heart is far from me.

But in vain do they worship me,

Teaching as their doctrines the precepts of men.

10 And he called to him the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: 11 Not that which entereth into the mouth defileth the man; but that which proceedeth out of the mouth, this defileth the man.

Matthew 15:3–11 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

But he answering said to them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God on account of your traditional teaching? For God commanded saying, Honour father and mother; and, He that speaks ill of father or mother, let him die the death. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or mother, It is a gift, whatsoever it be by which received from me thou wouldest be profited: and he shall in no wise honour his father or his mother; and ye have made void the commandment of God on account of your traditional teaching. Hypocrites! well has Esaias prophesied about you, saying, This people honour me with the lips, but their heart is far away from me; but in vain do they worship me, teaching as teachings commandments of men.

10 And having called to him the crowd, he said to them, Hear and understand: 11 Not what enters into the mouth defiles the man; but what goes forth out of the mouth, this defiles the man.

Matthew 15:3–11 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

He answered them, “Why do you break the commandment of God because of your traditions? For example, God said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’ and ‘Whoever curses father or mother must be put to death.’ But you say that whoever tells his father or mother, ‘I have given to God whatever support you might have received from me,’ does not have to honor his father. Because of your traditions you have destroyed the authority of God’s word. You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:

‘These people honor me with their lips,

but their hearts are far from me.

Their worship of me is pointless,

because their teachings are rules made by humans.’ ”

10 Then he called the crowd and said to them, “Listen and try to understand! 11 What goes into a person’s mouth doesn’t make him unclean. It’s what comes out of the mouth that makes a person unclean.”

Matthew 15:3–11 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

He answered them, And why do you break God’s commandment because of your tradition? For God said:

Honor your father and your mother; and,

The one who speaks evil of father or mother

must be put to death.

But you say, ‘Whoever tells his father or mother, “Whatever benefit you might have received from me is a gift committed to the temple”— he does not have to honor his father.’ In this way, you have revoked God’s word because of your tradition. Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said:

These people honor Me with their lips,

but their heart is far from Me.

They worship Me in vain,

teaching as doctrines the commands of men.

10 Summoning the crowd, He told them, Listen and understand: 11 It’s not what goes into the mouth that defiles a man, but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.”

Matthew 15:3–11 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

He answered them, And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? For God said,Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must surely die.’ But you say that whoever tells father or mother, ‘Whatever support you might have had from me is given to God,’ then that person need not honor the father. So, for the sake of your tradition, you make void the word of God. You hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied rightly about you when he said:

This people honors me with their lips,

but their hearts are far from me;

in vain do they worship me,

teaching human precepts as doctrines.’ ”

10 Then he called the crowd to him and said to them, Listen and understand: 11 it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles.”

Matthew 15:3–11 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

So he answered and said to them, “Why do you also break the commandment of God because of your tradition? For God said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and ‘The one who speaks evil of father or mother must certainly die.’ But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or his mother, “Whatever benefit you would have received from me is a gift to God,” need not honor his father,’ and you make void the word of God for the sake of your tradition. Hypocrites! Isaiah correctly prophesied about you saying,

‘This people honors me with their lips,

but their heart is far, far away from me,

and they worship me in vain,

teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ”

10 And summoning the crowd, he said to them, “Hear and understand: 11 It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth—this defiles a person.”

Matthew 15:3–11 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

Jesus replied, “And why don’t you obey God’s command? You would rather follow your own teachings! God said, ‘Honor your father and mother.’ He also said, ‘If anyone calls down a curse on his father or mother, he will be put to death.’ But you allow people to say to their parents, ‘Any help you might have received from us is a gift set apart for God.’ So they do not need to honor their parents with their gift. You make the word of God useless in order to follow your own teachings.

“You pretenders! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you. He said,

“ ‘These people honor me by what they say.

But their hearts are far away from me.

Their worship doesn’t mean anything to me.

They teach nothing but human rules.’ ”

10 Jesus called the crowd to him. He said, “Listen and understand. 11 What goes into your mouth does not make you ‘unclean.’ It’s what comes out of your mouth that makes you ‘unclean.’ ”

Matthew 15:3–11 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

And He answered and said to them, Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?

For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother is to be put to death.’

But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever I have that would help you has been given to God,

he is not to honor his father or his mother.’ And by this you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition.

You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you:

This people honors Me with their lips,

But their heart is far away from Me.

But in vain do they worship Me,

Teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’ ”

10 After Jesus called the crowd to Him, He said to them, Hear and understand.

11 It is not what enters into the mouth that defiles the man, but what proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man.”
