Christ Warns of Not Discerning the Times

54 Then He also said to the multitudes, xWhenever you see a cloud rising out of the west, immediately you say, ‘A shower is coming’; and so it is. 55 And when you see the ysouth wind blow, you say,There will be hot weather’; and there is. 56 Hypocrites! You can discern the face of the sky and of the earth, but how is it you do not discern zthis time?

You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time?

Luke 12:54–56 — English Standard Version (ESV)

54 He also said to the crowds, When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once,A shower is coming.’ And so it happens. 55 And when you see the south wind blowing, you say,There will be scorching heat,’ and it happens. 56 You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?

Luke 12:54–56 — New Living Translation (NLT)

54 Then Jesus turned to the crowd and said, When you see clouds beginning to form in the west, you say, ‘Here comes a shower.’ And you are right. 55 When the south wind blows, you say, ‘Today will be a scorcher.’ And it is. 56 You fools! You know how to interpret the weather signs of the earth and sky, but you don’t know how to interpret the present times.

54 Then Jesus said to the people, “When you see clouds coming up in the west, you say, ‘It’s going to rain,’ and it happens. 55 When you feel the wind begin to blow from the south, you say, ‘It will be a hot day,’ and it happens. 56 Hypocrites! You know how to understand the appearance of the earth and sky. Why don’t you understand what is happening now?

Luke 12:54–56 — American Standard Version (ASV)

54 And he said to the multitudes also, When ye see a cloud rising in the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it cometh to pass. 55 And when ye see a south wind blowing, ye say, There will be a scorching heat; and it cometh to pass. 56 Ye hypocrites, ye know how to interpret the face of the earth and the heaven; but how is it that ye know not how to interpret this time?

54 And he said also to the crowds, When ye see a cloud rising out of the west, straightway ye say, A shower is coming; and so it happens. 55 And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it happens. 56 Hypocrites, ye know how to judge of the appearance of the earth and of the heaven; how is it then that ye do not discern this time?

You can forecast the weather by judging the appearance of earth and sky. But for some reason you don’t know how to judge the time in which you’re living.

Luke 12:54–56 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

54 He also said to the crowds: When you see a cloud rising in the west, right away you say, ‘A storm is coming,’ and so it does. 55 And when the south wind is blowing, you say, ‘It’s going to be a scorcher!’ and it is. 56 Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky, but why don’t you know how to interpret this time?

Luke 12:54–56 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

54 He also said to the crowds, When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say,It is going to rain’; and so it happens. 55 And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, There will be scorching heat’; and it happens. 56 You hypocrites! 54 Jesus spoke to the crowd. He said, “You see a cloud rising in the west. Right away you say, ‘It’s going to rain.’ And it does. 55 The south wind blows. So you say, ‘It’s going to be hot.’ And it is. 56 You pretenders! You know how to understand the appearance of the earth and the sky. Why can’t you understand the meaning of what is happening right now?

Luke 12:54–56 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

54 And He was also saying to the crowds, When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say,A shower is coming,’ and so it turns out.

55 And when you see a south wind blowing, you say,It will be a hot day,’ and it turns out that way.

56 You hypocrites! You know how to analyze the appearance of the earth and the sky, but why do you not analyze this present time?
