Isaiah 5:14–16 — The New International Version (NIV)

14 Therefore Death expands its jaws,

opening wide its mouth;

into it will descend their nobles and masses

with all their brawlers and revelers.

15 So people will be brought low

and everyone humbled,

the eyes of the arrogant humbled.

16 But the Lord Almighty will be exalted by his justice,

and the holy God will be proved holy by his righteous acts.

Isaiah 5:14–16 — English Standard Version (ESV)

14 Therefore Sheol has enlarged its appetite

and opened its mouth beyond measure,

and the nobility of Jerusalem and her multitude will go down,

her revelers and he who exults in her.

15 Man is humbled, and each one is brought low,

and the eyes of the haughty are brought low.

16 But the Lord of hosts is exalted in justice,

and the Holy God shows himself holy in righteousness.

Isaiah 5:14–16 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

14 Therefore hell hath enlarged herself,

And opened her mouth without measure:

And their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp,

And he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.

15 And the mean man shall be brought down,

And the mighty man shall be humbled,

And the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled:

16 But the Lord of hosts shall be exalted in judgment,

And God that is holy shall be sanctified in righteousness.

Isaiah 5:14–16 — New Living Translation (NLT)

14 The grave is licking its lips in anticipation,

opening its mouth wide.

The great and the lowly

and all the drunken mob will be swallowed up.

15 Humanity will be destroyed, and people brought down;

even the arrogant will lower their eyes in humiliation.

16 But the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will be exalted by his justice.

The holiness of God will be displayed by his righteousness.

Isaiah 5:14–16 — New Century Version (NCV)

14 So the place of the dead wants more and more people,

and it opens wide its mouth.

Jerusalem’s important people and common people will go down into it,

with their happy and noisy ones.

15 So the common people and the great people will be brought down;

those who are proud will be humbled.

16 The Lord All-Powerful will receive glory by judging fairly;

the holy God will show himself holy by doing what is right.

Isaiah 5:14–16 — American Standard Version (ASV)

14 Therefore Sheol hath enlarged its desire, and opened its mouth without measure; and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth among them, descend into it. 15 And the mean man is bowed down, and the great man is humbled, and the eyes of the lofty are humbled: 16 but Jehovah of hosts is exalted in justice, and God the Holy One is sanctified in righteousness.

Isaiah 5:14–16 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

It opens its mouth very wide

so that honored people and common people will go down into it.

Those who are noisy and joyous will go down into it.

15 People will be brought down. Everyone will be humbled.

And the eyes of arrogant people will be humbled.

The holy God will show himself to be holy when he does what is right.

Isaiah 5:14–16 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

14 Therefore Sheol enlarges its throat

and opens wide its enormous jaws,

and down go Zion’s dignitaries, her masses,

and haughty eyes are humbled.

16 But the Lord of Hosts is exalted by His justice,

and the holy God is distinguished by righteousness.

and the eyes of the haughty are humiliated.

and the holy God shows himself holy by righteousness.

Its mouth is open wide to swallow them up.

Their nobles and the rest of the people will go down into it.

They will go there together with all those who have wild parties.

15 So man will be brought low.

People will be put to shame.

Those who brag will be brought down.

16 But the Lord who rules over all will be honored

because he judges fairly.

The holy God will show that he is holy

by doing what is right.
