Amos 6:1–6 — The New International Version (NIV)

Woe to you who are complacent in Zion,

and to you who feel secure on Mount Samaria,

you notable men of the foremost nation,

to whom the people of Israel come!

Go to Kalneh and look at it;

go from there to great Hamath,

and then go down to Gath in Philistia.

Are they better off than your two kingdoms?

Is their land larger than yours?

You put off the day of disaster

and bring near a reign of terror.

You lie on beds adorned with ivory

and lounge on your couches.

You dine on choice lambs

and fattened calves.

You strum away on your harps like David

and improvise on musical instruments.

You drink wine by the bowlful

and use the finest lotions,

but you do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph.

Amos 6:1–6 — English Standard Version (ESV)

“Woe to those who are at ease in Zion,

and to those who feel secure on the mountain of Samaria,

the notable men of the first of the nations,

to whom the house of Israel comes!

Pass over to Calneh, and see,

and from there go to Hamath the great;

then go down to Gath of the Philistines.

Are you better than these kingdoms?

Or is their territory greater than your territory,

O you who put far away the day of disaster

and bring near the seat of violence?

“Woe to those who lie on beds of ivory

and stretch themselves out on their couches,

and eat lambs from the flock

and calves from the midst of the stall,

who sing idle songs to the sound of the harp

and like David invent for themselves instruments of music,

who drink wine in bowls

and anoint themselves with the finest oils,

but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph!

Amos 6:1–6 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

Woe to them that are at ease in Zion,

And trust in the mountain of Samaria,

Which are named chief of the nations,

To whom the house of Israel came!

Pass ye unto Calneh, and see;

And from thence go ye to Hamath the great:

Then go down to Gath of the Philistines:

Be they better than these kingdoms?

Or their border greater than your border?

Ye that put far away the evil day,

And cause the seat of violence to come near;

That lie upon beds of ivory,

And stretch themselves upon their couches,

And eat the lambs out of the flock,

And the calves out of the midst of the stall;

That chant to the sound of the viol,

And invent to themselves instruments of musick, like David;

That drink wine in bowls,

And anoint themselves with the chief ointments:

But they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

Amos 6:1–6 — New Living Translation (NLT)

What sorrow awaits you who lounge in luxury in Jerusalem,

and you who feel secure in Samaria!

You are famous and popular in Israel,

and people go to you for help.

But go over to Calneh

and see what happened there.

Then go to the great city of Hamath

and down to the Philistine city of Gath.

You are no better than they were,

and look at how they were destroyed.

You push away every thought of coming disaster,

but your actions only bring the day of judgment closer.

How terrible for you who sprawl on ivory beds

and lounge on your couches,

eating the meat of tender lambs from the flock

and of choice calves fattened in the stall.

You sing trivial songs to the sound of the harp

and fancy yourselves to be great musicians like David.

You drink wine by the bowlful

and perfume yourselves with fragrant lotions.

You care nothing about the ruin of your nation.

Amos 6:1–6 — New Century Version (NCV)

How terrible it will be for those who have an easy life in Jerusalem,

for those who feel safe living on Mount Samaria.

You think you are the important people of the best nation in the world;

the Israelites come to you for help.

Go look at the city of Calneh,

and from there go to the great city Hamath;

then go down to Gath of the Philistines.

You are no better than these kingdoms.

Your land is no larger than theirs.

You put off the day of punishment,

but you bring near the day when you can do evil to others.

You lie on beds decorated with ivory

and stretch out on your couches.

You eat tender lambs

and fattened calves.

You make up songs on your harps,

and, like David, you compose songs on musical instruments.

You drink wine by the bowlful

and use the best perfumed lotions.

But you are not sad over the ruin of Israel,

Amos 6:1–6 — American Standard Version (ASV)

Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and to them that are secure in the mountain of Samaria, the notable men of the chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel come! Pass ye unto Calneh, and see; and from thence go ye to Hamath the great; then go down to Gath of the Philistines: are they better than these kingdoms? or is their border greater than your border? —ye that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near; that lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall; that sing idle songs to the sound of the viol; that invent for themselves instruments of music, like David; that drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief oils; but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

Amos 6:1–6 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

Woe to them that are at ease in Zion and that are secure in the mountain of Samaria, the renowned of the first of the nations, to whom the house of Israel come. Pass unto Calneh, and see; and from thence go to Hamath the great; and go down to Gath of the Philistines: are they better than these kingdoms? or their border greater than your border? Ye that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near; that lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves from the midst of the stall; that chant to the sound of the lute, and invent them instruments of music, like David; that drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments; but are not grieved for the breach of Joseph.

Amos 6:1–6 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

How horrible it will be for those who are at ease in Zion,

for those who feel secure on the mountain of Samaria,

and for the heads of the leading nations,

to whom the nation of Israel comes.

Go to Calneh and look.

Go from there to the great city of Hamath.

Then go to Gath, the city of the Philistines.

Are you better than these kingdoms?

Is their territory larger than yours?

How horrible it will be for those who think that a day of disaster is far away.

They bring the reign of violence closer.

How horrible it will be for those who sleep on ivory beds.

They sprawl out on their couches

and eat lambs from their flocks and calves from their stalls.

How horrible it will be for those who make up songs as they strum a harp.

Like David, they write all kinds of songs for themselves.

How horrible it will be for those who drink wine by the jugful.

They rub the finest oils all over themselves

and are not sorry for the ruin ⸤of the descendants⸥ of Joseph.

Amos 6:1–6 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

Woe to those who are at ease in Zion

and to those who feel secure on the hill of Samaria—

the notable people in this first of the nations,

those the house of Israel comes to.

Cross over to Calneh and see;

go from there to great Hamath;

then go down to Gath of the Philistines.

Are you better than these kingdoms?

Is their territory larger than yours?

You dismiss any thought of the evil day

and bring in a reign of violence.

They lie on beds inlaid with ivory,

sprawled out on their couches,

and dine on lambs from the flock

and calves from the stall.

They improvise songs to the sound of the harp

and invent their own musical instruments like David.

They drink wine by the bowlful

and anoint themselves with the finest oils

but do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph.

Amos 6:1–6 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

Alas for those who are at ease in Zion,

and for those who feel secure on Mount Samaria,

the notables of the first of the nations,

to whom the house of Israel resorts!

Cross over to Calneh, and see;

from there go to Hamath the great;

then go down to Gath of the Philistines.

Are you better than these kingdoms?

Or is your territory greater than their territory,

O you that put far away the evil day,

and bring near a reign of violence?

Alas for those who lie on beds of ivory,

and lounge on their couches,

and eat lambs from the flock,

and calves from the stall;

who sing idle songs to the sound of the harp,

and like David improvise on instruments of music;

who drink wine from bowls,

and anoint themselves with the finest oils,

but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph!

Amos 6:1–6 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

Alas for those being at ease in Zion, and those who feel secure on Mount Samaria, the notables of the best of the nations! The house of Israel resorts to them. Cross over to Calneh and see, and go from there to Hamath Rabbah and go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than these kingdoms, or is their territory greater than your territory? You that put off the day of disaster and bring near a reign of violence! Alas for those who lie on beds of ivory and lounge on their couches, and those eating young rams from the sheep and goats, and bull-calves from the middle of the animal stall. Alas for those who sing to the tune of the harp; like David they improvise on instruments of music. Alas for those who drink from sprinkling bowls of wine and anoint themselves with the best of olive oils and are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph.

Amos 6:1–6 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

How terrible it will be for you men

who are so contented on Mount Zion!

How terrible for you who feel secure

on the hill of Samaria!

You are famous men from the greatest nation.

The people of Israel come to you

for help and advice.

Go to the city of Calneh. Look at it.

Go from there to the great city of Hamath.

Then go down to Gath in Philistia.

Are those places better off than your two kingdoms?

Is their land larger than yours?

You are trying to avoid the time

when trouble will come.

But you are only bringing closer

the Assyrian rule of terror.

You lie down on beds

that are decorated with ivory.

You rest on your couches.

You eat the best lambs

and the fattest calves.

You pluck away on your harps as David did.

You play new songs on musical instruments.

You drink wine by the bowlful.

You use the finest lotions.

But Joseph’s people will soon be destroyed.

And you aren’t even sad about it.

Amos 6:1–6 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

Woe to those who are at ease in Zion

And to those who feel secure in the mountain of Samaria,

The distinguished men of the foremost of nations,

To whom the house of Israel comes.

Go over to Calneh and look,

And go from there to Hamath the great,

Then go down to Gath of the Philistines.

Are they better than these kingdoms,

Or is their territory greater than yours?

Do you put off the day of calamity,

And would you bring near the seat of violence?

Those who recline on beds of ivory

And sprawl on their couches,

And eat lambs from the flock

And calves from the midst of the stall,

Who improvise to the sound of the harp,

And like David have composed songs for themselves,

Who drink wine from sacrificial bowls

While they anoint themselves with the finest of oils,

Yet they have not grieved over the ruin of Joseph.
