Matthew 9:25–10:23

25 After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up.k 26 News of this spread through all that region.l

Jesus Heals the Blind and the Mute

27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!”m

28 When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, Do you believe that I am able to do this?”

“Yes, Lord,” they replied.n

29 Then he touched their eyes and said, According to your faith let it be done to you”;o 30 and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, See that no one knows about this.”p 31 But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.q

32 While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessedr and could not talks was brought to Jesus. 33 And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.”t

34 But the Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.”u

The Workers Are Few

35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.v 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them,w because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.x 37 Then he said to his disciples, The harvesty is plentiful but the workers are few.z 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve

10 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spiritsa and to heal every disease and sickness.b

These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.c

These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans.d Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.e As you go, proclaim this message:The kingdom of heavenf has come near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy,a drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.

Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your beltsg10 no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.h 11 Whatever town or village you enter, search there for some worthy person and stay at their house until you leave. 12 As you enter the home, give it your greeting.i 13 If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.j 15 Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrahk on the day of judgmentl than for that town.m

16 I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.n Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.o 17 Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councilsp and be flogged in the synagogues.q 18 On my account you will be brought before governors and kingsr as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. 19 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it.s At that time you will be given what to say, 20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Fathert speaking through you.

21 Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parentsu and have them put to death.v 22 You will be hated by everyone because of me,w but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.x 23 When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.y
