Luke 2:1–52

The Birth of Jesus

2 In those days Caesar Augustusq issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.r (This was the first census that took place whilea Quirinius was governor of Syria.)s And everyone went to their own town to register.

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehemt the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to himu and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angelv of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid.w I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Saviorx has been born to you; he is the Messiah,y the Lord.z 12 This will be a signa to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,

and on earth peaceb to those on whom his favor rests.”

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.c 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.d 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising Gode for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

21 On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child,f he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.g

Jesus Presented in the Temple

22 When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses,h Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”b),i 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”c j

25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout.k He was waiting for the consolation of Israel,l and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required,m 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:

29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,n

you may now dismissd your servant in peace.o

30 For my eyes have seen your salvation,p

31 which you have prepared in the sight of all nations…

Luke 10:1–12:59

Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-Two

10:4–12pp—Lk 9:3–5
10:13–15,21,22pp—Mt 11:21–23,25–27
10:23,24pp—Mt 13:16,17

10 After this the Lordp appointed seventy-twoa othersq and sent them two by twor ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.s He told them, The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.t Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.u Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.

When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you. Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages.v Do not move around from house to house.

When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you.w Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of Godx has come near to you.’ 10 But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, 11 Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you.y Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.’z 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodoma than for that town.b

13 Woe to you,c Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackclothd and ashes. 14 But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum,e will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.b

16 Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me.”f

17 The seventy-twog returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”h

18 He replied, I saw Satani fall like lightning from heaven.j 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakesk and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”l

21 At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.m Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.

22 All things have been committed to me by my Father.n No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”o

23 Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”p

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

10:25–28pp—Mt 22:34–40; Mk 12:28–31

25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”q

26 What is written in the Law?” he replied. How do you read it?”

27 He answered, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’c;r and, ‘Love …
