John 16:1–4 — English Standard Version (ESV)

I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. And they will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me. But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.

I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you.

John 16:1–4 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended. They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me. But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.

John 16:1–4 — New Living Translation (NLT)

I have told you these things so that you won’t abandon your faith. For you will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing a holy service for God. This is because they have never known the Father or me. Yes, I’m telling you these things now, so that when they happen, you will remember my warning. I didn’t tell you earlier because I was going to be with you for a while longer.

John 16:1–4 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble. They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. And these things they will do to you because they have not known the Father nor Me. But these things I have told you, that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them.

And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.

John 16:1–4 — New Century Version (NCV)

“I have told you these things to keep you from giving up. People will put you out of their synagogues. Yes, the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are offering service to God. They will do this because they have not known the Father and they have not known me. I have told you these things now so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you.

“I did not tell you these things at the beginning, because I was with you then.

John 16:1–4 — American Standard Version (ASV)

These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be caused to stumble. They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the hour cometh, that whosoever killeth you shall think that he offereth service unto God. And these things will they do, because they have not known the Father, nor me. But these things have I spoken unto you, that when their hour is come, ye may remember them, how that I told you. And these things I said not unto you from the beginning, because I was with you.

John 16:1–4 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

These things I have spoken unto you that ye may not be offended. They shall put you out of the synagogues; but the hour is coming that every one who kills you will think to render service to God; and these things they will do because they have not known the Father nor me. But I have spoken these things to you, that when their hour shall have come, ye may remember them, that I have said them unto you. But I did not say these things unto you from the beginning, because I was with you.

John 16:1–4 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

⸤Jesus continued,⸥ “I have said these things to you so that you won’t lose your faith. You will be thrown out of synagogues. Certainly, the time is coming when people who murder you will think that they are serving God. They will do these things to you because they haven’t known the Father or me. But I’ve told you this so that when it happens you’ll remember what I’ve told you. I didn’t tell you this at first, because I was with you.

John 16:1–4 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

I have told you these things to keep you from stumbling. They will ban you from the synagogues. In fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering service to God. They will do these things because they haven’t known the Father or Me. But I have told you these things so that when their time comes you may remember I told them to you. I didn’t tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.

John 16:1–4 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

I have said these things to you to keep you from stumbling. They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, an hour is coming when those who kill you will think that by doing so they are offering worship to God. And they will do this because they have not known the Father or me. But I have said these things to you so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you about them.

I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you.

John 16:1–4 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

“I have said these things to you so that you will not fall away. They will expel you from the synagogue, but an hour is coming that everyone who kills you will think they are offering service to God. And they will do these things because they do not know the Father or me. But I have said these things to you so that when their hour comes, you may remember that I told you about them.

“And I have not said these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you.

John 16:1–4 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

“I have told you all of this so that you will not go down the wrong path. You will be thrown out of the synagogue. In fact, a time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing God a favor. They will do things like that because they do not know the Father or me.

“Why have I told you this? So that when the time comes, you will remember that I warned you. I didn’t tell you this at first because I was with you.

John 16:1–4 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

These things I have spoken to you so that you may be kept from stumbling.

They will make you outcasts from the synagogue, but an hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think that he is offering service to God.

These things they will do because they have not known the Father or Me.

But these things I have spoken to you, so that when their hour comes, you may remember that I told you of them. These things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.

John 16:16–33

The Disciples’ Grief Will Turn to Joy

16 Jesus went on to say, In a little whiled you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”e

17 At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’f and Because I am going to the Father?”g 18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by a little while? We don’t understand what he is saying.”

19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mournh while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.i 21 A woman giving birth to a child has painj because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief,k but I will see you againl and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.m 23 In that dayn you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.o 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive,p and your joy will be complete.q

25 Though I have been speaking figuratively,r a time is comings when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name.t I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved meu and have believed that I came from God.v 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”w

29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.x 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believey that you came from God.”z

31 Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 A time is cominga and in fact has come when you will be scattered,b each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.c Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.d

33 I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.e In this world you will have trouble.f But take heart! I have overcomeg the world.”
