17 Because God wanted to make the unchangingx nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised,y he confirmed it with an oath. 18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie,z we who have fled to take hold of the hopea set before us may be greatly encouraged.

18 God took an oath so we would have good reason not to give up. We have run away from everything else to take hold of the hope offered to us in God’s promise. So God gave his promise and his oath. Those two things can’t change. He couldn’t lie about them.
