Psalm 144:1–8 — The New International Version (NIV)

Praise be to the Lord my Rock,

who trains my hands for war,

my fingers for battle.

He is my loving God and my fortress,

my stronghold and my deliverer,

my shield, in whom I take refuge,

who subdues peoples under me.

Lord, what are human beings that you care for them,

mere mortals that you think of them?

They are like a breath;

their days are like a fleeting shadow.

Part your heavens, Lord, and come down;

touch the mountains, so that they smoke.

Send forth lightning and scatter the enemy;

shoot your arrows and rout them.

Reach down your hand from on high;

deliver me and rescue me

from the mighty waters,

from the hands of foreigners

whose mouths are full of lies,

whose right hands are deceitful.

Psalm 144:1–8 — English Standard Version (ESV)

Blessed be the Lord, my rock,

who trains my hands for war,

and my fingers for battle;

he is my steadfast love and my fortress,

my stronghold and my deliverer,

my shield and he in whom I take refuge,

who subdues peoples under me.

O Lord, what is man that you regard him,

or the son of man that you think of him?

Man is like a breath;

his days are like a passing shadow.

Bow your heavens, O Lord, and come down!

Touch the mountains so that they smoke!

Flash forth the lightning and scatter them;

send out your arrows and rout them!

Stretch out your hand from on high;

rescue me and deliver me from the many waters,

from the hand of foreigners,

whose mouths speak lies

and whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.

Psalm 144:1–8 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

Blessed be the Lord my strength,

Which teacheth my hands to war,

And my fingers to fight:

My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer;

My shield, and he in whom I trust;

Who subdueth my people under me.

Lord, what is man, that thou Takest knowledge of him!

Or the son of man, that thou makest account of him!

Man is like to vanity:

His days are as a shadow that passeth away.

Bow thy heavens, O Lord, and come down:

Touch the mountains, and they shall smoke.

Cast forth lightning, and scatter them:

Shoot out thine arrows, and destroy them.

Send thine hand from above;

Rid me, and deliver me out of great waters,

From the hand of strange children;

Whose mouth speaketh vanity,

And their right hand is a right hand of falsehood.

Psalm 144:1–8 — New Living Translation (NLT)

Praise the Lord, who is my rock.

He trains my hands for war

and gives my fingers skill for battle.

He is my loving ally and my fortress,

my tower of safety, my rescuer.

He is my shield, and I take refuge in him.

He makes the nations submit to me.

O Lord, what are human beings that you should notice them,

mere mortals that you should think about them?

For they are like a breath of air;

their days are like a passing shadow.

Open the heavens, Lord, and come down.

Touch the mountains so they billow smoke.

Hurl your lightning bolts and scatter your enemies!

Shoot your arrows and confuse them!

Reach down from heaven and rescue me;

rescue me from deep waters,

from the power of my enemies.

Their mouths are full of lies;

they swear to tell the truth, but they lie instead.

Psalm 144:1–8 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

Blessed be the Lord my Rock, Who trains my hands for war,

And my fingers for battle—

My lovingkindness and my fortress,

My high tower and my deliverer,

My shield and the One in whom I take refuge,

Who subdues my people under me.

Lord, what is man, that You take knowledge of him?

Or the son of man, that You are mindful of him?

Man is like a breath;

His days are like a passing shadow.

Bow down Your heavens, O Lord, and come down;

Touch the mountains, and they shall smoke.

Flash forth lightning and scatter them;

Shoot out Your arrows and destroy them.

Stretch out Your hand from above;

Rescue me and deliver me out of great waters,

From the hand of foreigners,

Whose mouth speaks lying words,

And whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.

Psalm 144:1–8 — New Century Version (NCV)

Praise the Lord, my Rock,

who trains me for war,

who trains me for battle.

He protects me like a strong, walled city, and he loves me.

He is my defender and my Savior,

my shield and my protection.

He helps me keep my people under control.

Lord, why are people important to you?

Why do you even think about human beings?

People are like a breath;

their lives are like passing shadows.

Lord, tear open the sky and come down.

Touch the mountains so they will smoke.

Send the lightning and scatter my enemies.

Shoot your arrows and force them away.

Reach down from above.

Save me and rescue me out of this sea of enemies,

from these foreigners.

They are liars;

they are dishonest.

Psalm 144:1–8 — American Standard Version (ASV)

Blessed be Jehovah my rock,

Who teacheth my hands to war,

And my fingers to fight:

My lovingkindness, and my fortress,

My high tower, and my deliverer;

My shield, and he in whom I take refuge;

Who subdueth my people under me.

Jehovah, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him?

Or the son of man, that thou makest account of him?

Man is like to vanity:

His days are as a shadow that passeth away.

Bow thy heavens, O Jehovah, and come down:

Touch the mountains, and they shall smoke.

Cast forth lightning, and scatter them;

Send out thine arrows, and discomfit them.

Stretch forth thy hand from above;

Rescue me, and deliver me out of great waters,

Out of the hand of aliens;

Whose mouth speaketh deceit,

And whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.

Psalm 144:1–8 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

Blessed be Jehovah my rock, who teacheth my hands to war, my fingers to fight; My mercy and my fortress, my high tower and my deliverer, my shield and he in whom I trust, who subdueth my people under me! Jehovah, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him, the son of man, that thou takest thought of him? Man is like to vanity; his days are as a shadow that passeth away. Jehovah, bow thy heavens, and come down; touch the mountains, that they smoke; Cast forth lightnings, and scatter them; send forth thine arrows, and discomfit them: Stretch out thy hands from above; rescue me, and deliver me out of great waters, from the hand of aliens, Whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood.

Psalm 144:1–8 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

Thank the Lord, my rock,

who trained my hands to fight

and my fingers to do battle,

my merciful one, my fortress,

my stronghold, and my savior,

my shield, the one in whom I take refuge,

and the one who brings people under my authority.

O Lord, what are humans that you should care about them?

What are mere mortals that you should think about them?

Humans are like a breath of air.

Their life span is like a fleeting shadow.

O Lord, bend your heaven low, and come down.

Touch the mountains, and they will smoke.

Hurl bolts of lightning, and scatter them.

Shoot your arrows, and throw them into confusion.

Stretch out your hands from above.

Snatch me, and rescue me from raging waters

and from foreigners’ hands.

Their mouths speak lies.

Their right hands take false pledges.

Psalm 144:1–8 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

May the Lord, my rock, be praised,

who trains my hands for battle

and my fingers for warfare.

He is my faithful love and my fortress,

my stronghold and my deliverer.

He is my shield, and I take refuge in Him;

He subdues my people under me.

Lord, what is man, that You care for him,

the son of man, that You think of him?

Man is like a breath;

his days are like a passing shadow.

Lord, part Your heavens and come down.

Touch the mountains, and they will smoke.

Flash Your lightning and scatter the foe;

shoot Your arrows and rout them.

Reach down from heaven;

rescue me from deep water, and set me free

from the grasp of foreigners

whose mouths speak lies,

whose right hands are deceptive.

Psalm 144:1–8 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

Blessed be the Lord, my rock,

who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle;

my rock and my fortress,

my stronghold and my deliverer,

my shield, in whom I take refuge,

who subdues the peoples under me.

O Lord, what are human beings that you regard them,

or mortals that you think of them?

They are like a breath;

their days are like a passing shadow.

Bow your heavens, O Lord, and come down;

touch the mountains so that they smoke.

Make the lightning flash and scatter them;

send out your arrows and rout them.

Stretch out your hand from on high;

set me free and rescue me from the mighty waters,

from the hand of aliens,

whose mouths speak lies,

and whose right hands are false.

Psalm 144:1–8 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

Blessed be Yahweh, my rock,

the one who trains my hands for battle,

my fingers for war—

my loyal love and my fortress,

my stronghold and my deliverer,

my shield, and one in whom I take refuge,

the one who subdues peoples under me.

O Yahweh, what is humankind that you take knowledge of him,

or the son of man that you take thought of him?

Humankind is like a breath,

his days like a passing shadow.

O Yahweh, bow the heavens and come down;

touch the mountains so that they smoke.

Flash forth lightning and scatter them;

dispatch your arrows and rout them.

Stretch out your hands from on high;

Rescue me and deliver me from many waters,

from the hand of foreigners,

whose mouth speaks falsely,

and their right hand is a false right hand.

Psalm 144:1–8 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

Give praise to the Lord. He is my rock.

He trains my hands for war.

He trains my fingers for battle.

He is my loving God. He is like a fort to me.

He is my place of safety and the One who saves me.

He is like a shield that keeps me safe. I go to him for safety.

He brings nations under my control.

Lord, what is a human being that you take care of him?

What is a son of man that you think about him?

His life doesn’t last any longer than a breath.

His days are like a shadow that quickly disappears.

Lord, open up your heavens and come down.

Touch the mountains, and they will pour out smoke.

Send flashes of lightning and scatter my enemies.

Shoot your arrows and chase them away.

My enemies are like a mighty flood.

Reach down from heaven and save me.

Save me from strangers who attack me.

They tell all kinds of lies with their mouths.

Even when they make a promise by raising their right hands, they don’t mean it.
