Job 9:4–12 — The New International Version (NIV)

His wisdom is profound, his power is vast.

Who has resisted him and come out unscathed?

He moves mountains without their knowing it

and overturns them in his anger.

He shakes the earth from its place

and makes its pillars tremble.

He speaks to the sun and it does not shine;

he seals off the light of the stars.

He alone stretches out the heavens

and treads on the waves of the sea.

He is the Maker of the Bear and Orion,

the Pleiades and the constellations of the south.

10 He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed,

miracles that cannot be counted.

11 When he passes me, I cannot see him;

when he goes by, I cannot perceive him.

12 If he snatches away, who can stop him?

Who can say to him, ‘What are you doing?’

Job 9:4–12 — English Standard Version (ESV)

He is wise in heart and mighty in strength

—who has hardened himself against him, and succeeded?—

he who removes mountains, and they know it not,

when he overturns them in his anger,

who shakes the earth out of its place,

and its pillars tremble;

who commands the sun, and it does not rise;

who seals up the stars;

who alone stretched out the heavens

and trampled the waves of the sea;

who made the Bear and Orion,

the Pleiades and the chambers of the south;

10 who does great things beyond searching out,

and marvelous things beyond number.

11 Behold, he passes by me, and I see him not;

he moves on, but I do not perceive him.

12 Behold, he snatches away; who can turn him back?

Who will say to him, ‘What are you doing?’

Job 9:4–12 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength:

Who hath hardened himself against him, and hath prospered?

Which removeth the mountains, and they know not:

Which overturneth them in his anger.

Which shaketh the earth out of her place,

And the pillars thereof tremble.

Which commandeth the sun, and it riseth not;

And sealeth up the stars.

Which alone spreadeth out the heavens,

And treadeth upon the waves of the sea.

Which maketh Arcturus, Orion,

And Pleiades, and the chambers of the south.

10 Which doeth great things past finding out;

Yea, and wonders without number.

11 Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not:

He passeth on also, but I perceive him not.

12 Behold, he taketh away, who can hinder him?

Who will say unto him, What doest thou?

Job 9:4–12 — New Living Translation (NLT)

For God is so wise and so mighty.

Who has ever challenged him successfully?

“Without warning, he moves the mountains,

overturning them in his anger.

He shakes the earth from its place,

and its foundations tremble.

If he commands it, the sun won’t rise

and the stars won’t shine.

He alone has spread out the heavens

and marches on the waves of the sea.

He made all the stars—the Bear and Orion,

the Pleiades and the constellations of the southern sky.

10 He does great things too marvelous to understand.

He performs countless miracles.

11 “Yet when he comes near, I cannot see him.

When he moves by, I do not see him go.

12 If he snatches someone in death, who can stop him?

Who dares to ask, ‘What are you doing?’

Job 9:4–12 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

God is wise in heart and mighty in strength.

Who has hardened himself against Him and prospered?

He removes the mountains, and they do not know

When He overturns them in His anger;

He shakes the earth out of its place,

And its pillars tremble;

He commands the sun, and it does not rise;

He seals off the stars;

He alone spreads out the heavens,

And treads on the waves of the sea;

He made the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades,

And the chambers of the south;

10 He does great things past finding out,

Yes, wonders without number.

11 If He goes by me, I do not see Him;

If He moves past, I do not perceive Him;

12 If He takes away, who can hinder Him?

Who can say to Him, ‘What are You doing?’

Job 9:4–12 — New Century Version (NCV)

God’s wisdom is deep, and his power is great;

no one can fight him without getting hurt.

God moves mountains without anyone knowing it

and turns them over when he is angry.

He shakes the earth out of its place

and makes its foundations tremble.

He commands the sun not to shine

and shuts off the light of the stars.

He alone stretches out the skies

and walks on the waves of the sea.

It is God who made the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades

and the groups of stars in the southern sky.

10 He does wonders that cannot be understood;

he does so many miracles they cannot be counted.

11 When he passes me, I cannot see him;

when he goes by me, I do not recognize him.

12 If he snatches something away, no one can stop him

or say to him, ‘What are you doing?’

Job 9:4–12 — American Standard Version (ASV)

He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength:

Who hath hardened himself against him, and prospered?—

Him that removeth the mountains, and they know it not,

When he overturneth them in his anger;

That shaketh the earth out of its place,

And the pillars thereof tremble;

That commandeth the sun, and it riseth not,

And sealeth up the stars;

That alone stretcheth out the heavens,

And treadeth upon the waves of the sea;

That maketh the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades,

And the chambers of the south;

10 That doeth great things past finding out,

Yea, marvellous things without number.

11 Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not:

He passeth on also, but I perceive him not.

12 Behold, he seizeth the prey, who can hinder him?

Who will say unto him, What doest thou?

Job 9:4–12 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

He is wise in heart and mighty in strength: who hath hardened himself against him, and had peace? Who removeth mountains, and they know it not, when he overturneth them in his anger; Who shaketh the earth out of its place, and the pillars thereof tremble; Who commandeth the sun, and it riseth not, and he sealeth up the stars; Who alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the high waves of the sea; Who maketh the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades, and the chambers of the south; 10 Who doeth great things past finding out, and wonders without number. 11 Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not; and he passeth along, and I perceive him not. 12 Behold, he taketh away: who will hinder him? Who will say unto him, What doest thou?

Job 9:4–12 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

“God is wise in heart and mighty in power.

Who could oppose him and win?

He moves mountains without their knowing it,

and he topples them in his anger.

He shakes the earth from its place,

and its pillars tremble.

He commands the sun not to rise.

He doesn’t let the stars come out.

He stretches out the heavens by himself

and walks on the waves of the sea.

He made ⸤the constellations⸥ Ursa Major, Orion, and the Pleiades,

and the clusters of stars in the south.

10 He does great things that are unsearchable

and miracles that cannot be numbered.

11 He passes alongside of me, and I don’t even see him.

He goes past me, and I don’t even notice him.

12 He takes something away, ⸤but⸥ who can stop him?

Who is going to ask him, ‘What are you doing?’

Job 9:4–12 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

God is wise and all-powerful.

Who has opposed Him and come out unharmed?

He removes mountains without their knowledge,

overturning them in His anger.

He shakes the earth from its place

so that its pillars tremble.

He commands the sun not to shine

and seals off the stars.

He alone stretches out the heavens

and treads on the waves of the sea.

He makes the stars: the Bear, Orion,

the Pleiades, and the constellations of the southern sky.

10 He does great and unsearchable things,

wonders without number.

11 If He passes by me, I wouldn’t see Him;

if He goes right by, I wouldn’t recognize Him.

12 If He snatches something, who can stop Him?

Who can ask Him, “What are You doing?”

Job 9:4–12 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength

—who has resisted him, and succeeded?—

he who removes mountains, and they do not know it,

when he overturns them in his anger;

who shakes the earth out of its place,

and its pillars tremble;

who commands the sun, and it does not rise;

who seals up the stars;

who alone stretched out the heavens

and trampled the waves of the Sea;

who made the Bear and Orion,

the Pleiades and the chambers of the south;

10 who does great things beyond understanding,

and marvelous things without number.

11 Look, he passes by me, and I do not see him;

he moves on, but I do not perceive him.

12 He snatches away; who can stop him?

Who will say to him, ‘What are you doing?’

who overturns them in his anger.

He is the one who shakes the earth from its place,

and its pillars tremble.

He is the one who commands the sun, and it does not rise,

and he seals up the stars.

He is the one who alone stretches out the heavens

10 He is the one who does great things beyond understanding

11 “If he passes by me, I would not see him;

Who could say to him, ‘What are you doing?’

Job 9:4–12 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

His wisdom is deep. His power is great.

No one opposes him and comes away unharmed.

He moves mountains, and they don’t even know it.

When he is angry, he turns them upside down.

He shakes the earth loose from its place.

He makes its pillars tremble.

When he tells the sun not to shine, it doesn’t.

He turns off the light of the stars.

He’s the only one who can spread the heavens out.

He alone can walk on the waves of the ocean.

He made the Big Dipper and Orion.

He created the Pleiades and the southern stars.

10 He does wonderful things that can’t be understood.

He does miracles that can’t even be counted.

11 When he passes by me, I can’t see him.

When he goes past me, I can’t recognize him.

12 If he takes something, who can stop him?

Who would dare to ask him, ‘What are you doing?’
