Hosea 2:2–5 — The New International Version (NIV)

“Rebuke your mother, rebuke her,

for she is not my wife,

and I am not her husband.

Let her remove the adulterous look from her face

and the unfaithfulness from between her breasts.

Otherwise I will strip her naked

and make her as bare as on the day she was born;

I will make her like a desert,

turn her into a parched land,

and slay her with thirst.

I will not show my love to her children,

because they are the children of adultery.

Their mother has been unfaithful

and has conceived them in disgrace.

She said, ‘I will go after my lovers,

who give me my food and my water,

my wool and my linen, my olive oil and my drink.’

Hosea 2:2–5 — English Standard Version (ESV)

“Plead with your mother, plead—

for she is not my wife,

and I am not her husband—

that she put away her whoring from her face,

and her adultery from between her breasts;

lest I strip her naked

and make her as in the day she was born,

and make her like a wilderness,

and make her like a parched land,

and kill her with thirst.

Upon her children also I will have no mercy,

because they are children of whoredom.

For their mother has played the whore;

she who conceived them has acted shamefully.

For she said, ‘I will go after my lovers,

who give me my bread and my water,

my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.’

Hosea 2:2–5 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

Plead with your mother, plead:

For she is not my wife, neither am I her husband:

Let her therefore put away her whoredoms out of her sight,

And her adulteries from between her breasts;

Lest I strip her naked, and set her as in the day that she was born,

And make her as a wilderness, and set her like a dry land,

And slay her with thirst.

And I will not have mercy upon her children;

For they be the children of whoredoms.

For their mother hath played the harlot:

She that conceived them hath done shamefully:

For she said, I will go after my lovers,

That give me my bread and my water,

My wool and my flax, mine oil and my drink.

Hosea 2:2–5 — New Living Translation (NLT)

“But now bring charges against Israel—your mother—

for she is no longer my wife,

and I am no longer her husband.

Tell her to remove the prostitute’s makeup from her face

and the clothing that exposes her breasts.

Otherwise, I will strip her as naked

as she was on the day she was born.

I will leave her to die of thirst,

as in a dry and barren wilderness.

And I will not love her children,

for they were conceived in prostitution.

Their mother is a shameless prostitute

and became pregnant in a shameful way.

She said, ‘I’ll run after other lovers

and sell myself to them for food and water,

for clothing of wool and linen,

and for olive oil and drinks.’

Hosea 2:2–5 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

“Bring charges against your mother, bring charges;

For she is not My wife, nor am I her Husband!

Let her put away her harlotries from her sight,

And her adulteries from between her breasts;

Lest I strip her naked

And expose her, as in the day she was born,

And make her like a wilderness,

And set her like a dry land,

And slay her with thirst.

“I will not have mercy on her children,

For they are the children of harlotry.

For their mother has played the harlot;

She who conceived them has behaved shamefully.

For she said, ‘I will go after my lovers,

Who give me my bread and my water,

My wool and my linen,

My oil and my drink.’

Hosea 2:2–5 — New Century Version (NCV)

“Plead with your mother.

Accuse her, because she is no longer my wife,

and I am no longer her husband.

Tell her to stop acting like a prostitute,

to stop behaving like an unfaithful wife.

If she refuses, I will strip her naked

and leave her bare like the day she was born.

I will make her dry like a desert,

like a land without water,

and I will kill her with thirst.

I will not take pity on her children,

because they are the children of a prostitute.

Their mother has acted like a prostitute;

the one who became pregnant with them has acted disgracefully.

She said, ‘I will chase after my lovers,

who give me my food and water,

wool and flax, wine and olive oil.’

Hosea 2:2–5 — American Standard Version (ASV)

Contend with your mother, contend; for she is not my wife, neither am I her husband; and let her put away her whoredoms from her face, and her adulteries from between her breasts; lest I strip her naked, and set her as in the day that she was born, and make her as a wilderness, and set her like a dry land, and slay her with thirst. Yea, upon her children will I have no mercy; for they are children of whoredom; for their mother hath played the harlot; she that conceived them hath done shamefully; for she said, I will go after my lovers, that give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, mine oil and my drink.

Hosea 2:2–5 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

Plead with your mother, plead; for she is not my wife, neither am I her husband: and let her put away her whoredoms from her face, and her adulteries from between her breasts; lest I strip her naked, and set her as in the day that she was born, and make her as a wilderness, and set her as a dry land, and slay her with thirst. And I will not have mercy upon her children; for they are the children of whoredoms. For their mother hath played the harlot; she that conceived them hath done shamefully: for she said, I will go after my lovers, that give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, mine oil and my drink.

Hosea 2:2–5 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

“Plead with your mother; plead with her.

She no longer acts like my wife.

She no longer treats me like her husband.

Tell her to stop acting like a prostitute.

Tell her to remove the lovers from between her breasts.

If she refuses, I will strip her.

I will leave her as naked as the day she was born.

I will turn her into a dry and barren land,

and she will die of thirst.

I won’t love her children,

because they are children of a prostitute.

Their mother acted like a prostitute.

The woman who became pregnant with them did shameful things.

She said, ‘I’ll chase after my lovers.

They will give me food and water,

wool and linen, olive oil and wine.’

Hosea 2:2–5 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

Rebuke your mother; rebuke her.

For she is not My wife and I am not her husband.

Let her remove the promiscuous look from her face

and her adultery from between her breasts.

Otherwise, I will strip her naked

and expose her as she was on the day of her birth.

I will make her like a desert

and like a parched land,

and I will let her die of thirst.

I will have no compassion on her children

because they are the children of promiscuity.

Yes, their mother is promiscuous;

she conceived them and acted shamefully.

For she thought, “I will go after my lovers,

the men who give me my food and water,

my wool and flax, my oil and drink.”

Hosea 2:2–5 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

Plead with your mother, plead—

for she is not my wife,

and I am not her husband—

that she put away her whoring from her face,

and her adultery from between her breasts,

or I will strip her naked

and expose her as in the day she was born,

and make her like a wilderness,

and turn her into a parched land,

and kill her with thirst.

Upon her children also I will have no pity,

because they are children of whoredom.

For their mother has played the whore;

she who conceived them has acted shamefully.

For she said, “I will go after my lovers;

they give me my bread and my water,

my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.”

Hosea 2:2–5 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

Plead with your mother, plead—

because she is not my wife,

and I am not her husband.

Let her put away her whoring from before her,

and her adultery from between her breasts.

Lest I strip her naked

and expose her like the day when she was born;

I will make her like the desert

and turn her into parched land;

I will kill her with thirst.

And I will not have pity on her children,

because they are children of whoredom.

Because their mother was unfaithful;

she who conceived them has acted shamefully,

for she said:

“I will go after my lovers,

the ones who give me my bread, my water,

my wool, and my flax,

my oil, and my drink.”

Hosea 2:2–5 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

I said to my children,

“Talk things over with your mother.

Talk to her.

She isn’t acting like a wife to me anymore.

She no longer treats me as her husband.

Tell her to stop looking and acting like a prostitute.

Tell her not to let her lovers

lie on her breasts anymore.

If she doesn’t stop it, I will strip her naked.

I’ll make her as bare as she was on the day she was born.

I’ll make her like a desert.

She will become like dry land.

And I’ll let her die of thirst.”

I won’t show my love to Gomer’s children.

They are the children of other men.

Their mother hasn’t been faithful to me.

She who became pregnant with them

has brought shame on herself.

She said, “I will chase after my lovers.

They give me my food and water.

They provide me with wool and linen.

They give me olive oil and wine.”
