Jeremiah 49:19–20 — The New International Version (NIV)

19 “Like a lion coming up from Jordan’s thickets

to a rich pastureland,

I will chase Edom from its land in an instant.

Who is the chosen one I will appoint for this?

Who is like me and who can challenge me?

And what shepherd can stand against me?”

20 Therefore, hear what the Lord has planned against Edom,

what he has purposed against those who live in Teman:

The young of the flock will be dragged away;

their pasture will be appalled at their fate.

Jeremiah 49:19–20 — English Standard Version (ESV)

19 Behold, like a lion coming up from the jungle of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make him run away from her. And I will appoint over her whomever I choose. For who is like me? Who will summon me? What shepherd can stand before me? 20 Therefore hear the plan that the Lord has made against Edom and the purposes that he has formed against the inhabitants of Teman: Even the little ones of the flock shall be dragged away. Surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate.

Jeremiah 49:19–20 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

19 Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan

Against the habitation of the strong:

But I will suddenly make him run away from her:

And who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her?

For who is like me? and who will appoint me the time?

And who is that shepherd that will stand before me?

20 Therefore hear the counsel of the Lord,

That he hath taken against Edom;

And his purposes, that he hath purposed against the inhabitants of Teman:

Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out:

Surely he shall make their habitations desolate with them.

Jeremiah 49:19–20 — New Living Translation (NLT)

19 I will come like a lion from the thickets of the Jordan,

leaping on the sheep in the pasture.

I will chase Edom from its land,

and I will appoint the leader of my choice.

For who is like me, and who can challenge me?

What ruler can oppose my will?”

20 Listen to the Lord’s plans against Edom

and the people of Teman.

Even the little children will be dragged off like sheep,

and their homes will be destroyed.

Jeremiah 49:19–20 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

19 “Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the floodplain of the Jordan

Against the dwelling place of the strong;

But I will suddenly make him run away from her.

And who is a chosen man that I may appoint over her?

For who is like Me?

Who will arraign Me?

And who is that shepherd

Who will withstand Me?”

20 Therefore hear the counsel of the Lord that He has taken against Edom,

And His purposes that He has proposed against the inhabitants of Teman:

Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out;

Surely He shall make their dwelling places desolate with them.

Jeremiah 49:19–20 — New Century Version (NCV)

19 “Like a lion coming up from the thick bushes near the Jordan River

to attack a strong pen for sheep,

I will suddenly chase Edom from its land.

Who is the one I have chosen to do this?

There is no one like me,

no one who can take me to court.

None of their leaders can stand up against me.”

20 So listen to what the Lord has planned to do against Edom.

Listen to what he has decided to do to the people in the town of Teman.

He will surely drag away the young ones of Edom.

Their hometowns will surely be shocked at what happens to them.

Jeremiah 49:19–20 — American Standard Version (ASV)

19 Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the pride of the Jordan against the strong habitation: for I will suddenly make them run away from it; and whoso is chosen, him will I appoint over it: for who is like me? and who will appoint me a time? and who is the shepherd that will stand before me?

20 Therefore hear ye the counsel of Jehovah, that he hath taken against Edom; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely they shall drag them away, even the little ones of the flock; surely he shall make their habitation desolate over them.

Jeremiah 49:19–20 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

19 Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of the Jordan against the strong habitation; for I will make them suddenly run away from it; and who is a chosen man whom I shall appoint over her? For who is like me? and who will assign me a time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me? 20 Therefore hear the counsel of Jehovah, which he hath taken against Edom, and his purposes which he hath purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: The little ones of the flock shall certainly draw them away; he shall certainly make their habitation desolate for them.

Jeremiah 49:19–20 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

19 “I will suddenly chase them from their places

like a lion coming out of the jungle

along the Jordan River into pastureland.

I will appoint over Edom whomever I choose.

Who is like me? Who can challenge me?

Is there any leader who can stand up to me?”

20 Listen to the plans that the Lord is making against Edom

and the things he intends to do to those who live in Teman.

He will surely drag away the little ones of the flock.

He will surely destroy the pasture

because of the people who live in Teman.

Jeremiah 49:19–20 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

19 “Look, it will be like a lion coming from the thickets of the Jordan to the watered grazing land. Indeed, I will chase Edom away from her land in a flash. I will appoint whoever is chosen for her. For who is like Me? Who will summon Me? Who is the shepherd who can stand against Me?”

20 Therefore, hear the plans that the Lord has drawn up against Edom and the strategies He has devised against the people of Teman: The flock’s little lambs will certainly be dragged away, and their grazing land will be made desolate because of them.

Jeremiah 49:19–20 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

19 Like a lion coming up from the thickets of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly chase Edom away from it; and I will appoint over it whomever I choose. For who is like me? Who can summon me? Who is the shepherd who can stand before me? 20 Therefore hear the plan that the Lord has made against Edom and the purposes that he has formed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely the little ones of the flock shall be dragged away; surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate.

Jeremiah 49:19–20 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

19 “I will be like a lion coming up

from the bushes by the Jordan River.

I will hunt in rich grasslands.

I will chase you from your land in an instant.

What nation will I choose to do it?

Which one will I appoint?

Is anyone like me?

Who would dare to argue with me?

What leader can stand against me?”

20 So listen to what the Lord has planned

against the people of Edom.

Hear what he has planned against those who live in Teman.

Edom’s young people will be dragged away.

The Lord will completely destroy

their grasslands because of them.

Jeremiah 49:19–20 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

19 Behold, one will come up like a lion from the thickets of the Jordan against a perennially watered pasture; for in an instant I will make him run away from it, and whoever is chosen I shall appoint over it. For who is like Me, and who will summon Me into court? And who then is the shepherd who can stand against Me?”

20 Therefore hear the plan of the Lord which He has planned against Edom, and His purposes which He has purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: surely they will drag them off, even the little ones of the flock; surely He will make their pasture desolate because of them.
