Joshua 14:1–2

The Land Allotted West of the Jordan

14 These are the territories that the Israelitesa inherited in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the families of the tribes of the Israelitesb gave as an inheritance to them. Their inheritance was by lot, just as Yahweh commanded through the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes and the half-tribe.

Joshua 14:1–2 — The New International Version (NIV)

Now these are the areas the Israelites received as an inheritance in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the tribal clans of Israel allotted to them. Their inheritances were assigned by lot to the nine and a half tribes, as the Lord had commanded through Moses.

The shares of nine tribes and half of the tribe of Manasseh were decided by using lots. That’s what the Lord had commanded through Moses.
