Jeremiah 51:29–33 — The New International Version (NIV)

29 The land trembles and writhes,

for the Lord’s purposes against Babylon stand—

to lay waste the land of Babylon

so that no one will live there.

30 Babylon’s warriors have stopped fighting;

they remain in their strongholds.

Their strength is exhausted;

they have become weaklings.

Her dwellings are set on fire;

the bars of her gates are broken.

31 One courier follows another

and messenger follows messenger

to announce to the king of Babylon

that his entire city is captured,

32 the river crossings seized,

the marshes set on fire,

and the soldiers terrified.”

33 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says:

“Daughter Babylon is like a threshing floor

at the time it is trampled;

the time to harvest her will soon come.”

Jeremiah 51:29–33 — English Standard Version (ESV)

29 The land trembles and writhes in pain,

for the Lord’s purposes against Babylon stand,

to make the land of Babylon a desolation,

without inhabitant.

30 The warriors of Babylon have ceased fighting;

they remain in their strongholds;

their strength has failed;

they have become women;

her dwellings are on fire;

her bars are broken.

31 One runner runs to meet another,

and one messenger to meet another,

to tell the king of Babylon

that his city is taken on every side;

32 the fords have been seized,

the marshes are burned with fire,

and the soldiers are in panic.

33 For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel:

The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor

at the time when it is trodden;

yet a little while

and the time of her harvest will come.”

Jeremiah 51:29–33 — New Living Translation (NLT)

29 The earth trembles and writhes in pain,

for everything the Lord has planned against Babylon stands unchanged.

Babylon will be left desolate without a single inhabitant.

30 Her mightiest warriors no longer fight.

They stay in their barracks, their courage gone.

They have become like women.

The invaders have burned the houses

and broken down the city gates.

31 The news is passed from one runner to the next

as the messengers hurry to tell the king

that his city has been captured.

32 All the escape routes are blocked.

The marshes have been set aflame,

and the army is in a panic.

33 This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies,

the God of Israel, says:

“Babylon is like wheat on a threshing floor,

about to be trampled.

In just a little while

her harvest will begin.”

Jeremiah 51:29–33 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

29 And the land will tremble and sorrow;

For every purpose of the Lord shall be performed against Babylon,

To make the land of Babylon a desolation without inhabitant.

30 The mighty men of Babylon have ceased fighting,

They have remained in their strongholds;

Their might has failed,

They became like women;

They have burned her dwelling places,

The bars of her gate are broken.

31 One runner will run to meet another,

And one messenger to meet another,

To show the king of Babylon that his city is taken on all sides;

32 The passages are blocked,

The reeds they have burned with fire,

And the men of war are terrified.

33 For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel:

“The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor

When it is time to thresh her;

Yet a little while

And the time of her harvest will come.”

Jeremiah 51:29–33 — New Century Version (NCV)

29 The land shakes and moves in pain,

because the Lord will do what he has planned to Babylon.

He will make Babylon an empty desert,

where no one will live.

30 Babylon’s warriors have stopped fighting.

They stay in their protected cities.

Their strength is gone,

and they have become like frightened women.

Babylon’s houses are burning.

The bars of her gates are broken.

31 One messenger follows another;

messenger follows messenger.

They announce to the king of Babylon

that his whole city has been captured.

32 The river crossings have been captured,

and the swamplands are burning.

All of Babylon’s soldiers are terribly afraid.”

33 This is what the Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel, says:

“The city of Babylon is like a threshing floor,

where people crush the grain at harvest time.

The time to harvest Babylon is coming soon.”

Jeremiah 51:29–33 — American Standard Version (ASV)

29 And the land trembleth and is in pain; for the purposes of Jehovah against Babylon do stand, to make the land of Babylon a desolation, without inhabitant. 30 The mighty men of Babylon have forborne to fight, they remain in their strongholds; their might hath failed; they are become as women: her dwelling-places are set on fire; her bars are broken. 31 One post shall run to meet another, and one messenger to meet another, to show the king of Babylon that his city is taken on every quarter: 32 and the passages are seized, and the reeds they have burned with fire, and the men of war are affrighted.

33 For thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing-floor at the time when it is trodden; yet a little while, and the time of harvest shall come for her.

Jeremiah 51:29–33 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

29 And the land trembleth and is in pain; for the purposes of Jehovah against Babylon do stand, to make the land of Babylon a desolation, without inhabitant. 30 The mighty men of Babylon have ceased to fight, they are sitting in the fortresses; their might hath failed, they are become as women: they have set her dwelling places on fire; her bars are broken. 31 Courier runneth to meet courier, and messenger to meet messenger, to announce to the king of Babylon that his city is taken from end to end; 32 and the passages are seized, and the reedy places are burnt with fire, and the men of war are affrighted. 33 For thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing-floor, at the time of its being trodden; yet a little while, and the time of harvest shall come for her.

Jeremiah 51:29–33 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

29 The earth trembles and writhes in pain.

The Lord carries out his plans against Babylon

to make Babylon a wasteland so that no one will live there.

30 The warriors of Babylon have stopped fighting.

They stay in their fortified cities.

Their strength has failed. They have become women.

Their buildings are set on fire.

The bars across their gates are broken.

31 Runners run to meet runners.

Messengers follow messengers.

They inform the king of Babylon that his entire city is captured.

32 The river crossings have been taken.

The enemy has burned its marshes,

and its soldiers are terrified.

33 This is what the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says:

The people of Babylon are like a threshing floor

at the time it is trampled.

Their harvest time will come soon.

Jeremiah 51:29–33 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

29 The earth quakes and trembles

because the Lord’s intentions against Babylon stand:

to make the land of Babylon an uninhabited desolation.

30 Babylon’s warriors have stopped fighting;

they sit in their strongholds.

Their might is exhausted;

they have become like women.

Babylon’s homes have been set ablaze,

her gate bars are shattered.

31 Messenger races to meet messenger,

and herald to meet herald,

to announce to the king of Babylon

that his city has been captured

from end to end.

32 The fords have been seized,

the marshes set on fire,

and the soldiers are terrified.

33 For this is what the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:

Daughter Babylon is like a threshing floor

at the time it is trampled.

In just a little while her harvest time will come.

Jeremiah 51:29–33 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

29 The land trembles and writhes,

for the Lord’s purposes against Babylon stand,

to make the land of Babylon a desolation,

without inhabitant.

30 The warriors of Babylon have given up fighting,

they remain in their strongholds;

their strength has failed,

they have become women;

her buildings are set on fire,

her bars are broken.

31 One runner runs to meet another,

and one messenger to meet another,

to tell the king of Babylon

that his city is taken from end to end:

32 the fords have been seized,

the marshes have been burned with fire,

and the soldiers are in panic.

33 For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel:

Daughter Babylon is like a threshing floor

at the time when it is trodden;

yet a little while

and the time of her harvest will come.

Jeremiah 51:29–33 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

29 And the land quakes and writhes,

for the plans of Yahweh against Babylon stand,

to make the land of Babylon as a horror,

without inhabitant.

30 The warriors of Babylon have ceased to fight,

they remain in the strongholds,

their power has dried up,

they have become as women.

Her dwelling places are set on fire,

her bars are broken.

31 one runner runs to meet another runner,

and one messenger to meet another messenger,

to tell the king of Babylon that his city has been captured,

from end to end.

32 And the fords have been seized,

and the reed marshes have been burned with fire,

and the soldiers are horrified.

33 For thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel,

“The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor

at the time it is trodden down,

just a little while

and the time of the harvest will come for her.”

Jeremiah 51:29–33 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

29 The Babylonians tremble and shake with fear.

My plans against them stand firm.

I plan to destroy their land completely.

Then no one will live there.

30 Babylon’s soldiers have stopped fighting.

They remain in their forts.

Their strength is all gone.

They have become like weak women.

Their buildings are set on fire.

The heavy metal bars on their gates are broken.

31 One messenger after another

comes to the king of Babylonia.

All of them announce that

his entire city is captured.

32 The places where people go across the Euphrates River have been captured.

The swamps have been set on fire.

And the soldiers are terrified.”

33 The Lord who rules over all is the God of Israel. He says,

“The city of Babylon is like a threshing floor

when cattle are walking on it.

The time to destroy it will soon come.”

Jeremiah 51:29–33 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

29 So the land quakes and writhes,

For the purposes of the Lord against Babylon stand,

To make the land of Babylon

A desolation without inhabitants.

30 The mighty men of Babylon have ceased fighting,

They stay in the strongholds;

Their strength is exhausted,

They are becoming like women;

Their dwelling places are set on fire,

The bars of her gates are broken.

31 One courier runs to meet another,

And one messenger to meet another,

To tell the king of Babylon

That his city has been captured from end to end;

32 The fords also have been seized,

And they have burned the marshes with fire,

And the men of war are terrified.

33 For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel:

“The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor

At the time it is stamped firm;

Yet in a little while the time of harvest will come for her.”
