Isaiah 9:4–5 — The New International Version (NIV)

For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,

you have shattered

the yoke that burdens them,

the bar across their shoulders,

the rod of their oppressor.

Every warrior’s boot used in battle

and every garment rolled in blood

will be destined for burning,

will be fuel for the fire.

Isaiah 9:4–5 — English Standard Version (ESV)

For the yoke of his burden,

and the staff for his shoulder,

the rod of his oppressor,

you have broken as on the day of Midian.

For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult

and every garment rolled in blood

will be burned as fuel for the fire.

Isaiah 9:4–5 — New Living Translation (NLT)

For you will break the yoke of their slavery

and lift the heavy burden from their shoulders.

You will break the oppressor’s rod,

just as you did when you destroyed the army of Midian.

The boots of the warrior

and the uniforms bloodstained by war

will all be burned.

They will be fuel for the fire.

Isaiah 9:4–5 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

For You have broken the yoke of his burden

And the staff of his shoulder,

The rod of his oppressor,

As in the day of Midian.

For every warrior’s sandal from the noisy battle,

And garments rolled in blood,

Will be used for burning and fuel of fire.

Isaiah 9:4–5 — New Century Version (NCV)

Like the time you defeated Midian,

you have taken away their heavy load

and the heavy pole from their backs

and the rod the enemy used to punish them.

Every boot that marched in battle

and every uniform stained with blood

has been thrown into the fire.

Isaiah 9:4–5 — American Standard Version (ASV)

For the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, thou hast broken as in the day of Midian. For all the armor of the armed man in the tumult, and the garments rolled in blood, shall be for burning, for fuel of fire.

Isaiah 9:4–5 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian. For every boot of him that is shod for the tumult, and the garment rolled in blood, shall be for burning, fuel for fire.

Isaiah 9:4–5 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

You will break the yokethat burdens them,

the bar that is across their shoulders,

and the stick used by their oppressor,

as ⸤you did in the battle against⸥ Midian.

Every warrior’s boot marching to the sound of battle

and every garment rolled in blood

will be burned as fuel in the fire.

Isaiah 9:4–5 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

For You have shattered their oppressive yoke

and the rod on their shoulders,

the staff of their oppressor,

just as You did on the day of Midian.

For the trampling boot of battle

and the bloodied garments of war

will be burned as fuel for the fire.

Isaiah 9:4–5 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

For the yoke of their burden,

and all the garments rolled in blood

shall be burned as fuel for the fire.

Isaiah 9:4–5 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

and the stick of its shoulder,

the rod of its oppressor, on the day of Midian.

and garment rolled in blood

will be for burning—fire fuel.

Isaiah 9:4–5 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

You set Israel free from Midian long ago.

In the same way, you will break

the heavy yoke that weighs Israel down.

You will break the wooden beams that are on their shoulders.

You will break the rods of those who strike them down.

Every fighting man’s boot that is used in battle will be burned up.

So will every piece of clothes

that is covered with blood.

All of them will be thrown into the fire.

Isaiah 9:4–5 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

For You shall break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders,

For every boot of the booted warrior in the battle tumult,

And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.
