Hosea 12:2–6 — The New International Version (NIV)

The Lord has a charge to bring against Judah;

he will punish Jacob according to his ways

and repay him according to his deeds.

In the womb he grasped his brother’s heel;

as a man he struggled with God.

He struggled with the angel and overcame him;

he wept and begged for his favor.

He found him at Bethel

and talked with him there—

the Lord God Almighty,

the Lord is his name!

But you must return to your God;

maintain love and justice,

and wait for your God always.

Hosea 12:2–6 — English Standard Version (ESV)

The Lord has an indictment against Judah

and will punish Jacob according to his ways;

he will repay him according to his deeds.

In the womb he took his brother by the heel,

and in his manhood he strove with God.

He strove with the angel and prevailed;

he wept and sought his favor.

He met God at Bethel,

and there God spoke with us—

the Lord, the God of hosts,

the Lord is his memorial name:

“So you, by the help of your God, return,

hold fast to love and justice,

and wait continually for your God.”

Hosea 12:2–6 — New Living Translation (NLT)

Now the Lord is bringing charges against Judah.

He is about to punish Jacob for all his deceitful ways,

and pay him back for all he has done.

Even in the womb,

Jacob struggled with his brother;

when he became a man,

he even fought with God.

Yes, he wrestled with the angel and won.

He wept and pleaded for a blessing from him.

There at Bethel he met God face to face,

and God spoke to him—

the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies,

the Lord is his name!

So now, come back to your God.

Act with love and justice,

and always depend on him.

Hosea 12:2–6 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

“The Lord also brings a charge against Judah,

And will punish Jacob according to his ways;

According to his deeds He will recompense him.

He took his brother by the heel in the womb,

And in his strength he struggled with God.

Yes, he struggled with the Angel and prevailed;

He wept, and sought favor from Him.

He found Him in Bethel,

And there He spoke to us—

That is, the Lord God of hosts.

The Lord is His memorable name.

So you, by the help of your God, return;

Observe mercy and justice,

And wait on your God continually.

Hosea 12:2–6 — New Century Version (NCV)

The Lord also has some things against Judah.

He will punish Israel for what they have done;

he will give them what they deserve.

Their ancestor Jacob held on to his brother’s heel

while the two of them were being born.

When he grew to be a man,

he wrestled with God.

When Jacob wrestled with the angel and won,

he cried and asked for his blessing.

Later, God met with him at Bethel

and spoke with him there.

It was the Lord God All-Powerful;

the Lord is his great name.

You must return to your God;

love him, do what is just,

and always trust in him as your God.

Hosea 12:2–6 — American Standard Version (ASV)

Jehovah hath also a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings will he recompense him. In the womb he took his brother by the heel; and in his manhood he had power with God: yea, he had power over the angel, and prevailed; he wept, and made supplication unto him: he found him at Beth-el, and there he spake with us, even Jehovah, the God of hosts; Jehovah is his memorial name. Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep kindness and justice, and wait for thy God continually.
