Ecclesiastes 8:5–9

Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man’s heart discerneth both time and jjudgment.

Because kto every purpose there is time and jjudgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him. For lhe knoweth not that which shall be: for mwho can tell him ||when it shall be? There is no man that hath npower over the spirit oto retain the spirit; neither hath he hpower in the day of death: and there is no ||pdischarge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver qthose that are given to it. All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own hurt.

Ecclesiastes 8:5–9 — The New International Version (NIV)

Whoever obeys his command will come to no harm,

and the wise heart will know the proper time and procedure.

For there is a proper time and procedure for every matter,

though a person may be weighed down by misery.

Since no one knows the future,

who can tell someone else what is to come?

As no one has power over the wind to contain it,

so no one has power over the time of their death.

As no one is discharged in time of war,

so wickedness will not release those who practice it.

All this I saw, as I applied my mind to everything done under the sun. There is a time when a man lords it over others to his own hurt.

Ecclesiastes 8:5–9 — English Standard Version (ESV)

Whoever keeps a command will know no evil thing, and the wise heart will know the proper time and the just way. For there is a time and a way for everything, although man’s trouble lies heavy on him. For he does not know what is to be, for who can tell him how it will be? No man has power to retain the spirit, or power over the day of death. There is no discharge from war, nor will wickedness deliver those who are given to it. All this I observed while applying my heart to all that is done under the sun, when man had power over man to his hurt.

Ecclesiastes 8:5–9 — New Living Translation (NLT)

Those who obey him will not be punished. Those who are wise will find a time and a way to do what is right, for there is a time and a way for everything, even when a person is in trouble.

Indeed, how can people avoid what they don’t know is going to happen? None of us can hold back our spirit from departing. None of us has the power to prevent the day of our death. There is no escaping that obligation, that dark battle. And in the face of death, wickedness will certainly not rescue the wicked.

I have thought deeply about all that goes on here under the sun, where people have the power to hurt each other.

Ecclesiastes 8:5–9 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

He who keeps his command will experience nothing harmful;

And a wise man’s heart discerns both time and judgment,

Because for every matter there is a time and judgment,

Though the misery of man increases greatly.

For he does not know what will happen;

So who can tell him when it will occur?

No one has power over the spirit to retain the spirit,

And no one has power in the day of death.

There is no release from that war,

And wickedness will not deliver those who are given to it.

All this I have seen, and applied my heart to every work that is done under the sun: There is a time in which one man rules over another to his own hurt.

Ecclesiastes 8:5–9 — New Century Version (NCV)

Whoever obeys the king’s command will be safe.

A wise person does the right thing at the right time.

There is a right time and a right way for everything,

yet people often have many troubles.

They do not know what the future holds,

and no one can tell them what will happen.

No one can control the wind

or stop his own death.

No soldier is released in times of war,

and evil does not set free those who do evil.

I saw all of this as I considered all that is done here on earth. Sometimes people harm those they control.

Ecclesiastes 8:5–9 — American Standard Version (ASV)

Whoso keepeth the commandment shall know no evil thing; and a wise man’s heart discerneth time and judgment: for to every purpose there is a time and judgment; because the misery of man is great upon him: for he knoweth not that which shall be; for who can tell him how it shall be? There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power over the day of death; and there is no discharge in war: neither shall wickedness deliver him that is given to it.

All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man hath power over another to his hurt.

Ecclesiastes 8:5–9 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

Whoso keepeth the commandment shall know no evil thing; and a wise man’s heart knoweth time and manner.

For to every purpose there is time and manner. For the misery of man is great upon him; for he knoweth not that which shall be; for who can tell him how it shall be? There is no man who hath control over the spirit to retain the spirit; and no one hath control over the day of death; and there is no discharge in that war, neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.

All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time when man ruleth man to his hurt.

Ecclesiastes 8:5–9 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

Whoever obeys his commands will avoid trouble. The mind of a wise person will know the right time and the right way ⸤to act⸥. There is a right time and a right way ⸤to act⸥ in every situation. Yet, a terrible human tragedy hangs over people.

They don’t know what the future will bring. So who can tell them how things will turn out? No one has the power to prevent the spiritof life from leaving. No one has control over the day of his own death. There is no way to avoid the war ⸤against death⸥. Wickedness will not save wicked people ⸤from dying⸥.

I have seen all of this, and I have carefully considered all that is done under the sun whenever one person has authority to hurt others.

Ecclesiastes 8:5–9 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

The one who keeps a command will not experience anything harmful, and a wise heart knows the right time and procedure. For every activity there is a right time and procedure, even though man’s troubles are heavy on him. Yet no one knows what will happen because who can tell him what will happen? No one has authority over the wind to restrain it, and there is no authority over the day of death; there is no furlough in battle, and wickedness will not allow those who practice it to escape. All this I have seen, applying my mind to all the work that is done under the sun, at a time when one man has authority over another to his harm.

Ecclesiastes 8:5–9 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

Whoever obeys a command will meet no harm, and the wise mind will know the time and way. For every matter has its time and way, although the troubles of mortals lie heavy upon them. Indeed, they do not know what is to be, for who can tell them how it will be? No one has power over the wind to restrain the wind, or power over the day of death; there is no discharge from the battle, nor does wickedness deliver those who practice it. All this I observed, applying my mind to all that is done under the sun, while one person exercises authority over another to the other’s hurt.

Ecclesiastes 8:5–9 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

Whoever obeys his command will not suffer disaster.

The wise mind knows the proper time and the right procedure.

For there is a proper time and right procedure for every matter,

even though the trouble of man weighs heavy upon him.

Surely no one knows what will be,

so who can tell anyone what will happen?

Just as no one can control the wind to restrain the wind,

so also no one can control the day of his death.

Just as no one is discharged in time of war,

so wickedness will not deliver the wicked.

I saw all this as I applied my heart to all the deeds done under the sun: sometimes those in authority harm others.

Ecclesiastes 8:5–9 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

No one who obeys his command will be harmed.

Those who are wise will know the proper time and way to approach him.

There’s a proper time and way for people to do everything.

That’s true even though a man might be suffering greatly.

No one knows what lies ahead.

So who can tell a person what’s going to happen?

He can’t stop the wind from blowing.

And he doesn’t have the power to decide when he will die.

No one is let out of the army in times of war.

And evil won’t let go of those who practice it.

I understood all of those things. I used my mind to study everything that’s done on earth. A man sometimes makes life hard for others. But he ends up hurting himself.

Ecclesiastes 8:5–9 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

He who keeps a royal command experiences no trouble, for a wise heart knows the proper time and procedure.

For there is a proper time and procedure for every delight, though a man’s trouble is heavy upon him.

If no one knows what will happen, who can tell him when it will happen?

No man has authority to restrain the wind with the wind, or authority over the day of death; and there is no discharge in the time of war, and evil will not deliver those who practice it.

All this I have seen and applied my mind to every deed that has been done under the sun wherein a man has exercised authority over another man to his hurt.
