how then could I gaze at a virgin?
2 What would be cmy portion from God above
and cmy heritage from the Almighty on high?
3 Is not calamity for the unrighteous,
and disaster for the workers of iniquity?
4 dDoes not he see my ways
and enumber all my steps?
5 “If I have walked with falsehood
and my foot has hastened to deceit;
6 (Let me be fweighed in a just balance,
and let God know my integrity!)
7 if my step has turned aside from the way
and gmy heart has gone after my eyes,
and if any hspot has stuck to my hands,
8 then let me isow, and another eat,
and let what grows for me1 be rooted out.
Job 31:1–8 — The New International Version (NIV)
1 “I made a covenant with my eyes
not to look lustfully at a young woman.
2 For what is our lot from God above,
our heritage from the Almighty on high?
3 Is it not ruin for the wicked,
disaster for those who do wrong?
4 Does he not see my ways
and count my every step?
5 “If I have walked with falsehood
or my foot has hurried after deceit—
6 let God weigh me in honest scales
and he will know that I am blameless—
7 if my steps have turned from the path,
if my heart has been led by my eyes,
or if my hands have been defiled,
8 then may others eat what I have sown,
and may my crops be uprooted.
Job 31:1–8 — King James Version (KJV 1900)
1 I made a covenant with mine eyes;
Why then should I think upon a maid?
2 For what portion of God is there from above?
And what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?
3 Is not destruction to the wicked?
And a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?
4 Doth not he see my ways,
And count all my steps?
5 If I have walked with vanity,
Or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;
6 Let me be weighed in an even balance,
That God may know mine integrity.
7 If my step hath turned out of the way,
And mine heart walked after mine eyes,
And if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;
8 Then let me sow, and let another eat;
Yea, let my offspring be rooted out.
Job 31:1–8 — New Living Translation (NLT)
1 “I made a covenant with my eyes
not to look with lust at a young woman.
2 For what has God above chosen for us?
What is our inheritance from the Almighty on high?
3 Isn’t it calamity for the wicked
and misfortune for those who do evil?
4 Doesn’t he see everything I do
and every step I take?
5 “Have I lied to anyone
or deceived anyone?
6 Let God weigh me on the scales of justice,
for he knows my integrity.
7 If I have strayed from his pathway,
or if my heart has lusted for what my eyes have seen,
or if I am guilty of any other sin,
8 then let someone else eat the crops I have planted.
Let all that I have planted be uprooted.
Job 31:1–8 — The New King James Version (NKJV)
1 “I have made a covenant with my eyes;
Why then should I look upon a young woman?
2 For what is the allotment of God from above,
And the inheritance of the Almighty from on high?
3 Is it not destruction for the wicked,
And disaster for the workers of iniquity?
4 Does He not see my ways,
And count all my steps?
5 “If I have walked with falsehood,
Or if my foot has hastened to deceit,
6 Let me be weighed on honest scales,
That God may know my integrity.
7 If my step has turned from the way,
Or my heart walked after my eyes,
Or if any spot adheres to my hands,
8 Then let me sow, and another eat;
Yes, let my harvest be rooted out.
Job 31:1–8 — New Century Version (NCV)

not to look with desire at a girl.

What has the Almighty planned from on high?
3 It is ruin for evil people
and disaster for those who do wrong.
4 God sees my ways
and counts every step I take.
5 “If I have been dishonest
or lied to others,
6 then let God weigh me on honest scales.
Then he will know I have done nothing wrong.
7 If I have turned away from doing what is right,
or my heart has been led by my eyes to do wrong,
or my hands have been made unclean,
8 then let other people eat what I have planted,
and let my crops be plowed up.

4 Doth not he see my ways,
And number all my steps?
5 If I have walked with falsehood,
And my foot hath hasted to deceit
6 (Let me be weighed in an even balance,
That God may know mine integrity);
7 If my step hath turned out of the way,
And my heart walked after mine eyes,

8 Then let me sow, and let another eat;
Yea, let the produce of my field be rooted out.

1 “I have made an agreement with my eyes.
Then how can I look with lust at a virgin?
2 What would God above do ⸤to me⸥?
What would be my inheritance from the Almighty on high?
3 Aren’t there catastrophes for wicked people
and disasters for those who do wrong?
4 Doesn’t he see my ways
and count all my steps?
5 “If I have walked with lies
or my feet have run after deception,
6 ⸤then⸥ let God weigh me on honest scales,
and he will know I have integrity.
7 “If my steps have left the ⸤proper⸥ path,
or my heart has followed ⸤the desire of⸥ my eyes,
or my hands are stained ⸤with sin⸥,
8 ⸤then⸥ let someone else eat what I have planted,
and let my crops be uprooted.
Job 31:1–8 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
1 I have made a covenant with my eyes.
How then could I look at a young woman?
2 For what portion would I have from God above,
or what inheritance from the Almighty on high?
3 Doesn’t disaster come to the unjust
and misfortune to evildoers?
4 Does He not see my ways
and number all my steps?
5 If I have walked in falsehood
or my foot has rushed to deceit,
6 let God weigh me in accurate scales,
and He will recognize my integrity.
7 If my step has turned from the way,
my heart has followed my eyes,
or impurity has stained my hands,
8 let someone else eat what I have sown,
and let my crops be uprooted.
Job 31:1–8 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
1 “I have made a covenant with my eyes;
how then could I look upon a virgin?

4 Does he not see my ways,
and number all my steps?
5 “If I have walked with falsehood,
and my foot has hurried to deceit—
6 let me be weighed in a just balance,

4 Does he not see my ways
and count all my steps?
5 “If I have walked with falseness,
and my foot has hastened to deceit,
6 let him weigh me in the balance of justice,
and let God know my blamelessness.

8 let me sow, and let another eat,
and let my crops be rooted out.

4 Doesn’t God see how I live?
Doesn’t he count every step I take?
5 “I haven’t told any lies.
My feet haven’t hurried to cheat others.
6 So let God weigh me in honest scales.
Then he’ll know I haven’t done anything wrong.
7 Suppose my steps have turned away from the right path.
Suppose my heart has longed for what my eyes have seen.
Or suppose my hands have become ‘unclean.’
8 Then may others eat what I’ve planted.
May my crops be pulled up by the roots.
