Job 5:8–16 — The New International Version (NIV)

“But if I were you, I would appeal to God;

I would lay my cause before him.

He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed,

miracles that cannot be counted.

10 He provides rain for the earth;

he sends water on the countryside.

11 The lowly he sets on high,

and those who mourn are lifted to safety.

12 He thwarts the plans of the crafty,

so that their hands achieve no success.

13 He catches the wise in their craftiness,

and the schemes of the wily are swept away.

14 Darkness comes upon them in the daytime;

at noon they grope as in the night.

15 He saves the needy from the sword in their mouth;

he saves them from the clutches of the powerful.

16 So the poor have hope,

and injustice shuts its mouth.

Job 5:8–16 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

I would seek unto God,

And unto God would I commit my cause:

Which doeth great things and unsearchable;

Marvellous things without number:

10 Who giveth rain upon the earth,

And sendeth waters upon the fields:

11 To set up on high those that be low;

That those which mourn may be exalted to safety.

12 He disappointeth the devices of the crafty,

So that their hands cannot perform their enterprise.

13 He taketh the wise in their own craftiness:

And the counsel of the froward is carried headlong.

14 They meet with darkness in the daytime,

And grope in the noonday as in the night.

15 But he saveth the poor from the sword,

From their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.

16 So the poor hath hope,

And iniquity stoppeth her mouth.

Job 5:8–16 — New Living Translation (NLT)

“If I were you, I would go to God

and present my case to him.

He does great things too marvelous to understand.

He performs countless miracles.

10 He gives rain for the earth

and water for the fields.

11 He gives prosperity to the poor

and protects those who suffer.

12 He frustrates the plans of schemers

so the work of their hands will not succeed.

13 He traps the wise in their own cleverness

so their cunning schemes are thwarted.

14 They find it is dark in the daytime,

and they grope at noon as if it were night.

15 He rescues the poor from the cutting words of the strong,

and rescues them from the clutches of the powerful.

16 And so at last the poor have hope,

and the snapping jaws of the wicked are shut.

Job 5:8–16 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

“But as for me, I would seek God,

And to God I would commit my cause—

Who does great things, and unsearchable,

Marvelous things without number.

10 He gives rain on the earth,

And sends waters on the fields.

11 He sets on high those who are lowly,

And those who mourn are lifted to safety.

12 He frustrates the devices of the crafty,

So that their hands cannot carry out their plans.

13 He catches the wise in their own craftiness,

And the counsel of the cunning comes quickly upon them.

14 They meet with darkness in the daytime,

And grope at noontime as in the night.

15 But He saves the needy from the sword,

From the mouth of the mighty,

And from their hand.

16 So the poor have hope,

And injustice shuts her mouth.

Job 5:8–16 — New Century Version (NCV)

“But if I were you, I would call on God

and bring my problem before him.

God does wonders that cannot be understood;

he does so many miracles they cannot be counted.

10 He gives rain to the earth

and sends water on the fields.

11 He makes the humble person important

and lifts the sad to places of safety.

12 He ruins the plans of those who trick others

so they have no success.

13 He catches the wise in their own clever traps

and sweeps away the plans of those who try to trick others.

14 Darkness covers them up in the daytime;

even at noon they feel around in the dark.

15 God saves the needy from their lies

and from the harm done by powerful people.

16 So the poor have hope,

while those who are unfair are silenced.

Job 5:8–16 — American Standard Version (ASV)

But as for me, I would seek unto God,

And unto God would I commit my cause;

Who doeth great things and unsearchable,

Marvellous things without number:

10 Who giveth rain upon the earth,

And sendeth waters upon the fields;

11 So that he setteth up on high those that are low,

And those that mourn are exalted to safety.

12 He frustrateth the devices of the crafty,

So that their hands cannot perform their enterprise.

13 He taketh the wise in their own craftiness;

And the counsel of the cunning is carried headlong.

14 They meet with darkness in the day-time,

And grope at noonday as in the night.

15 But he saveth from the sword of their mouth,

Even the needy from the hand of the mighty.

16 So the poor hath hope,

And iniquity stoppeth her mouth.

Job 5:8–16 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

But as for me I will seek unto •God, and unto God commit my cause; Who doeth great things and unsearchable, marvellous things without number; 10 Who giveth rain on the face of the earth, and sendeth waters on the face of the fields; 11 Setting up on high those that are low; and mourners are exalted to prosperity. 12 He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, and their hands carry not out the enterprise. 13 He taketh the wise in their own craftiness; and the counsel of the wily is carried headlong: 14 They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope at midday as in the night. 15 And he saveth the needy from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty. 16 So the poor hath what he hopeth for, and unrighteousness stoppeth her mouth.

Job 5:8–16 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

“But I would seek God’s help

and present my case to him.

He does great things that ⸤we⸥ cannot understand

and miracles that ⸤we⸥ cannot count.

10 He gives rain to the earth

and sends water to the fields.

11 He places lowly people up high.

He lifts those who mourn to safety.

12 He keeps shrewd people from carrying out their plans

13 He catches the wise with their own tricks.

The plans of schemers prove to be hasty.

14 In the daytime they meet darkness

and grope in the sunlight as if it were night.

15 “But he saves ⸤other people⸥ from their slander

and the needy from the power of the mighty.

16 Then the poor have hope

while wrongdoing shuts its mouth.

Job 5:8–16 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

However, if I were you, I would appeal to God

He does great and unsearchable things,

wonders without number.

15 He saves the needy from their sharp words

Job 5:8–16 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

“As for me, I would seek God,

15 But he saves the needy from the sword of their mouth,

from the hand of the mighty.

16 So the poor have hope,

and injustice shuts its mouth.

Job 5:8–16 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

“But I myself will seek God,

and to God I would commit my cause.

He is doing great and unsearchable things,

marvelous things without number—

10 the one who is giving rain on the surface of the earth

and is sending water on the surface of the fields,

11 to set the lowly on high,

and those mourning are lifted to safety.

12 He is frustrating the devices of the crafty,

and their hands do not achieve success.

13 He is capturing the wise in their craftiness,

and the schemes of the wily are rushed.

14 In the daytime they meet with darkness,

and they grope at noon as in the night.

15 And he saves from the sword of their mouth,

even the poor from the hand of the strong.

16 So there is hope for the powerless,

and wickedness shuts its mouth.

Job 5:8–16 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

“If I were you, I’d make my appeal to God.

I’d bring my case to be judged by him.

He does wonderful things that can’t be understood.

He does miracles that can’t even be counted.

10 He sends rain on the earth.

He sends water on the countryside.

11 He lifts up those who are lowly in spirit.

He lifts up those who are sad.

He keeps them safe.

12 He stops those who are tricky from doing what they plan to do.

The work of their hands doesn’t succeed.

13 Some people think they are so wise.

But God catches them in their own tricks.

He sweeps away the evil plans of sinful people.

14 Darkness covers them in the daytime.

At noon they feel their way around as if it were night.

15 God saves needy people from the cutting words of their enemies.

He saves them from their powerful hands.

16 So those who are poor have hope.

And God shuts the mouths of people who don’t treat others fairly.

Job 5:8–16 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

“But as for me, I would seek God,

And I would place my cause before God;

Who does great and unsearchable things,

Wonders without number.

10 “He gives rain on the earth

And sends water on the fields,

11 So that He sets on high those who are lowly,

And those who mourn are lifted to safety.

12 “He frustrates the plotting of the shrewd,

So that their hands cannot attain success.

13 “He captures the wise by their own shrewdness,

And the advice of the cunning is quickly thwarted.

14 “By day they meet with darkness,

And grope at noon as in the night.

15 “But He saves from the sword of their mouth,

And the poor from the hand of the mighty.

16 “So the helpless has hope,

And unrighteousness must shut its mouth.
