Isaiah 9:2–3 — The New International Version (NIV)

The people walking in darkness

have seen a great light;

on those living in the land of deep darkness

a light has dawned.

You have enlarged the nation

and increased their joy;

they rejoice before you

as people rejoice at the harvest,

as warriors rejoice

when dividing the plunder.

Isaiah 9:2–3 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light:

They that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy:

They joy before thee according to the joy in harvest,

And as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

Isaiah 9:2–3 — New Living Translation (NLT)

 The people who walk in darkness

will see a great light.

For those who live in a land of deep darkness,

a light will shine.

You will enlarge the nation of Israel,

and its people will rejoice.

They will rejoice before you

as people rejoice at the harvest

and like warriors dividing the plunder.

Isaiah 9:2–3 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

The people who walked in darkness

Have seen a great light;

Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death,

Upon them a light has shined.

You have multiplied the nation

And increased its joy;

They rejoice before You

According to the joy of harvest,

As men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

Isaiah 9:2–3 — New Century Version (NCV)

Before those people lived in darkness,

but now they have seen a great light.

They lived in a dark land,

but a light has shined on them.

God, you have caused the nation to grow

and made the people happy.

And they have shown their happiness to you,

like the joy during harvest time,

like the joy of people

taking what they have won in war.

Isaiah 9:2–3 — American Standard Version (ASV)

The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. Thou hast multiplied the nation, thou hast increased their joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

Isaiah 9:2–3 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

the people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; they that dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them light hath shone. Thou hast multiplied the nation, hast increased its joy: they joy before thee like to the joy in harvest; as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

Isaiah 9:2–3 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

The people who walk in darkness will see a bright light.

The light will shine on those who live in the land of death’s shadow.

You will expand the nation and increase its happiness.

It will be happy in your presence

like those who celebrate the harvest

or rejoice when dividing loot.

Isaiah 9:2–3 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

The people walking in darkness

have seen a great light;

a light has dawned

on those living in the land of darkness.

You have enlarged the nation

and increased its joy.

The people have rejoiced before You

as they rejoice at harvest time

and as they rejoice when dividing spoils.

Isaiah 9:2–3 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

The people who walked in darkness

have seen a great light;

those who lived in a land of deep darkness—

on them light has shined.

You have multiplied the nation,

you have increased its joy;

they rejoice before you

as with joy at the harvest,

as people exult when dividing plunder.

Isaiah 9:2–3 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;

light has shined on those who lived in a land of darkness.

You have made the nation numerous;

you have not made the joy great.

They rejoice in your presence as with joy at the harvest,

as they rejoice when they divide plunder.

Isaiah 9:2–3 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

The people who are now living in darkness

will see a great light.

They are now living in a very dark land.

But a light will shine on them.

Lord, you will make our nation larger.

You will increase their joy.

They will show you how glad they are.

They will be as glad as people are at harvest time.

They will be as glad as soldiers are

when they share the things they’ve taken after a battle.

Isaiah 9:2–3 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

The people who walk in darkness

Will see a great light;

Those who live in a dark land,

The light will shine on them.

You shall multiply the nation,

You shall increase their gladness;

They will be glad in Your presence

As with the gladness of harvest,

As men rejoice when they divide the spoil.
