Genesis 9:4–6 — The New International Version (NIV)

“But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it. And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each human being, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of another human being.

“Whoever sheds human blood,

by humans shall their blood be shed;

for in the image of God

has God made mankind.

Genesis 9:4–6 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat. And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man. Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.

Genesis 9:4–6 — New Living Translation (NLT)

But you must never eat any meat that still has the lifeblood in it.

“And I will require the blood of anyone who takes another person’s life. If a wild animal kills a person, it must die. And anyone who murders a fellow human must die. If anyone takes a human life, that person’s life will also be taken by human hands. For God made human beings in his own image.

Genesis 9:4–6 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood. Surely for your lifeblood I will demand a reckoning; from the hand of every beast I will require it, and from the hand of man. From the hand of every man’s brother I will require the life of man.

“Whoever sheds man’s blood,

By man his blood shall be shed;

For in the image of God

He made man.

Genesis 9:4–6 — New Century Version (NCV)

But you must not eat meat that still has blood in it, because blood gives life. I will demand blood for life. I will demand the life of any animal that kills a person, and I will demand the life of anyone who takes another person’s life.

“Whoever kills a human being

will be killed by a human being,

because God made humans

in his own image.

Genesis 9:4–6 — American Standard Version (ASV)

But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat. And surely your blood, the blood of your lives, will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it: and at the hand of man, even at the hand of every man’s brother, will I require the life of man. Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.

Genesis 9:4–6 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

Only, the flesh with its life, its blood, ye shall not eat. And indeed your blood, the blood of your lives, will I require: at the hand of every animal will I require it, and at the hand of Man, at the hand of each the blood of his brother, will I require the life of Man. Whoso sheddeth Man’s blood, by Man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God he hath made Man.

Genesis 9:4–6 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

“But you are not to eat meat with blood in it. (Blood is life.) In addition, I will demand your blood for your life. I will demand it from any animal or from any person. I will demand the life of any person ⸤who kills⸥ another person.

Whoever sheds human blood,

by humans his blood will be shed,

because in the image of God, God made humans.

Genesis 9:4–6 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

However, you must not eat meat with its lifeblood in it. I will require the life of every animal and every man for your life and your blood. I will require the life of each man’s brother for a man’s life.

Whoever sheds man’s blood,

his blood will be shed by man,

for God made man in His image.

Genesis 9:4–6 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

Only, you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood. For your own lifeblood I will surely require a reckoning: from every animal I will require it and from human beings, each one for the blood of another, I will require a reckoning for human life.

Whoever sheds the blood of a human,

by a human shall that person’s blood be shed;

for in his own image

God made humankind.

Genesis 9:4–6 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

Only you shall not eat raw flesh with blood in it. And your lifeblood I will require; from every animal I will require it. And from the hand of humankind, from the hand of each man to his brother I will require the life of humankind.

As for the one shedding the blood of humankind,

by humankind his blood shall be shed,

for God made humankind in his own image.

Genesis 9:4–6 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

“But you must not eat meat that still has blood in it. You can be sure that I will hold someone accountable if you are murdered. I will even hold animals accountable if they kill you. I will also hold anyone accountable who murders another person.

“Anyone who murders man

will be killed by man.

That is because I have made man

in my own likeness.

Genesis 9:4–6 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

Only you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.

Surely I will require your lifeblood; from every beast I will require it. And from every man, from every man’s brother I will require the life of man.

“Whoever sheds man’s blood,

By man his blood shall be shed,

For in the image of God

He made man.
