Jeremiah 8:14–16 — The New International Version (NIV)

14 Why are we sitting here?

Gather together!

Let us flee to the fortified cities

and perish there!

For the Lord our God has doomed us to perish

and given us poisoned water to drink,

because we have sinned against him.

15 We hoped for peace

but no good has come,

for a time of healing

but there is only terror.

16 The snorting of the enemy’s horses

is heard from Dan;

at the neighing of their stallions

the whole land trembles.

They have come to devour

the land and everything in it,

the city and all who live there.

Jeremiah 8:14–16 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

14 Why do we sit still? assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the defenced cities, and let us be silent there: for the Lord our God hath put us to silence, and given us water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against the Lord. 15 We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of health, and behold trouble! 16 The snorting of his horses was heard from Dan: the whole land trembled at the sound of the neighing of his strong ones; for they are come, and have devoured the land, and all that is in it; the city, and those that dwell therein.

Jeremiah 8:14–16 — New Living Translation (NLT)

14 “Then the people will say,

‘Why should we wait here to die?

Come, let’s go to the fortified towns and die there.

For the Lord our God has decreed our destruction

and has given us a cup of poison to drink

because we sinned against the Lord.

15 We hoped for peace, but no peace came.

We hoped for a time of healing, but found only terror.’

16 “The snorting of the enemies’ warhorses can be heard

all the way from the land of Dan in the north!

The neighing of their stallions makes the whole land tremble.

They are coming to devour the land and everything in it—

cities and people alike.

Jeremiah 8:14–16 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

14 “Why do we sit still?

Assemble yourselves,

And let us enter the fortified cities,

And let us be silent there.

For the Lord our God has put us to silence

And given us water of gall to drink,

Because we have sinned against the Lord.

15 We looked for peace, but no good came;

And for a time of health, and there was trouble!

16 The snorting of His horses was heard from Dan.

The whole land trembled at the sound of the neighing of His strong ones;

For they have come and devoured the land and all that is in it,

The city and those who dwell in it.”

Jeremiah 8:14–16 — New Century Version (NCV)

14 “Why are we just sitting here?

Let’s get together!

We have sinned against the Lord,

so he has given us poisoned water to drink.

Come, let’s run to the strong, walled cities.

The Lord our God has decided that we must die,

so let’s die there.

15 We hoped to have peace,

but nothing good has come.

We hoped for a time when he would heal us,

but only terror has come.

16 From the land of Dan,

the snorting of the enemy’s horses is heard.

The ground shakes from the neighing of their large horses.

They have come and destroyed

the land and everything in it,

the city and all who live there.”

Jeremiah 8:14–16 — American Standard Version (ASV)

14 Why do we sit still? assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the fortified cities, and let us be silent there; for Jehovah our God hath put us to silence, and given us water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against Jehovah. 15 We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of healing, and, behold, dismay! 16 The snorting of his horses is heard from Dan: at the sound of the neighing of his strong ones the whole land trembleth; for they are come, and have devoured the land and all that is in it; the city and those that dwell therein.

Jeremiah 8:14–16 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

14 Why do we sit still? Assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the fenced cities, and let us be silent there: for Jehovah our God hath put us to silence, and given us water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against Jehovah. 15 Peace is looked for, and there is no good; a time of healing, and behold, terror. 16 The snorting of his horses is heard from Dan: the whole land trembleth at the sound of the neighing of his steeds, and they come, and devour the land, and all it contains, the city and those that dwell therein.

Jeremiah 8:14–16 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

14 Why are we just sitting here? Let’s get up!

Let’s go into the fortified cities and die there.

The Lord our God has condemned us to die.

He has given us poison to drink

because we have sinned against the Lord

15 We hoped for peace, but nothing good has happened.

We hoped for a time of healing, but there’s only terror.

16 The snorting of horses can be heard from Dan.

The neighing of stallions makes the whole land tremble.

They are coming to devour the land and everything in it,

the city and its people.

Jeremiah 8:14–16 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

14 Why are we just sitting here?

Gather together; let us enter the fortified cities

and perish there,

for the Lord our God has destroyed us.

He has given us poisoned water to drink,

because we have sinned against the Lord.

15 We hoped for peace, but there was nothing good;

for a time of healing, but there was only terror.

16 From Dan the snorting of horses is heard.

At the sound of the neighing of mighty steeds,

the whole land quakes.

They come to devour the land and everything in it,

the city and all its residents.

Jeremiah 8:14–16 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

14 Why do we sit still?

Gather together, let us go into the fortified cities

and perish there;

for the Lord our God has doomed us to perish,

and has given us poisoned water to drink,

because we have sinned against the Lord.

15 We look for peace, but find no good,

for a time of healing, but there is terror instead.

16 The snorting of their horses is heard from Dan;

at the sound of the neighing of their stallions

the whole land quakes.

They come and devour the land and all that fills it,

the city and those who live in it.

Jeremiah 8:14–16 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

14 Why are we sitting?

Gather, and let us go into the fortified cities,

and let us perish there,

for Yahweh our God has caused us to perish,

and has provided drink for us, water of poison,

because we have sinned against Yahweh.

15 We hope for peace,

but there is no good,

for a time of healing,

but there is terror.

16 “From Dan is heard the snorting of their horses,

from the sound of the neighing of their stallions all the land quakes,

for they come and devour the land,

and that which fills the city,

and those who live in it.

Jeremiah 8:14–16 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

14 Why are we sitting here?

Let’s gather together!

Let’s run to the cities that have high walls around them!

Let’s die there!

The Lord our God has sentenced us to death.

He has given us poisoned water to drink.

That’s because we’ve sinned against him.

15 We hoped peace would come.

But nothing good has happened to us.

We hoped we would finally be healed.

But all we got was terror.

16 When our enemy’s horses snort,

the noise is heard all the way from Dan.

When their stallions neigh,

the whole land trembles with fear.

They have come to destroy

the land and everything in it.

The city and everyone who lives there will be destroyed.

Jeremiah 8:14–16 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

14 Why are we sitting still?

Assemble yourselves, and let us go into the fortified cities

And let us perish there,

Because the Lord our God has doomed us

And given us poisoned water to drink,

For we have sinned against the Lord.

15 We waited for peace, but no good came;

For a time of healing, but behold, terror!

16 From Dan is heard the snorting of his horses;

At the sound of the neighing of his stallions

The whole land quakes;

For they come and devour the land and its fullness,

The city and its inhabitants.
