Preface
These are sermons, not essays or chapters taken from books about themes. Not all of these sermons could be called great, but all of them are meaningful. They apply the truths of the Bible to the needs of the human heart, which is something that all effective preaching must do.
While some are better known than others, all of the preachers whose sermons I have selected had important ministries and were highly respected in their day. The fact that a sermon is included in this volume does not mean that either the compiler or the publisher agrees with or endorses everything that the man did, preached, or wrote. The sermon is here because it has a valued contribution to make.
These are sermons about significant themes. The pulpit is no place to play with trivia. The preacher has thirty minutes in which to help mend broken hearts, change defeated lives, and save lost souls; he can never accomplish this demanding ministry by distributing homiletical tidbits. In these difficult days we do not need clever pulpiteers who discuss the times; we need dedicated ambassadors who will preach the eternities.
The reading of these sermons can enrich your spiritual life. The studying of them can enrich your skills as an interpreter and expounder of God’s truth. However God uses these sermons in your life and ministry, my prayer is that His church around the world will be encouraged and strengthened by them.

And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God (Romans 8:26–27).
The apostle Paul was writing to a tried and afflicted people, and one of his objects was to remind them of the rivers of that which were flowing near at hand. He first of all stirred up their pure minds by way of remembrance as to their sonship—for he says, “as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God” (Rom. 8:14). They were, therefore, encouraged to take part and lot with Christ, the elder brother, with whom they had become joint heirs. They were exhorted to suffer with Him that they might afterward be glorified with Him. All that they endured came from a Father’s hand and this should comfort them. A thousand sources of joy are opened in that one blessing of adoption. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ by whom we have been begotten into the family of grace.
When Paul had alluded to that consoling subject he turned to the next ground of comfort, namely, that we are to be sustained under present ...
