Preface

This dictionary was originally written in Spanish and published in Spain, as a project of the Hispanic Association for Theological Education (AETH). This is an organization of approximately a thousand members who are committed to Hispanic theological education. The dictionary itself was written and edited with no remuneration by members of AETH, as a contribution both to Hispanic theological education and to the coffers of AETH. For this reason, it is a product of love and commitment. But it is also such a product because the authors and editors of this volume are deeply committed to the subject of their study, and they hope that the use of the dictionary will move others toward similar commitments.

As is always the case in projects such as this, there will be disagreements as to who should have been—or should not have been—included. Our guidelines have been relatively simple, but not always easy to apply. On the one hand, we have sought to make this dictionary as ample as possible. Thus, the persons included here are not only those who are part of our direct theological ancestry, but also people belonging to other theological traditions within Christianity, so that here the reader will find articles about Protestants, Roman Catholics, Orthodox, Copts, Ethiopians, and so on. Following the same goal of amplitude, we have paid special attention to theological work taking place outside the traditional theological centers of Europe and North America. Thus, in the pages that follow the reader will find a wide representation of theologians from Africa, Asia, and particularly Latin America. On the other hand, given the mission of AETH, we have paid particular attention to Latino and Latina theologians working within the United States, as well as to other minorities in the same context.
