Introducing the ‘Teaching’ Series
Christian teachers and preachers constantly need encouragement to keep on with the task of declaring God’s truth to the church and to the world, ‘in season and out of season’, whether people will receive it, or not. It is a demanding responsibility to teach the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth in a culture which has ceased to believe in truth’s very existence. But we also need encouragement to do the job better; to keep on improving our human talents and abilities, to develop new lines of thinking about the relevant application of God’s unchanging Word to our contemporary context. Above all, we need to grow in our faithfulness to what God has said and in our dependence on the Holy Spirit to use the Word of God, to do the work of God, through us.
That is the purpose behind the Teaching series from Proclamation Trust Media. To date we have published Teaching Matthew and Teaching John, which have drawn encouraging responses, and so we are developing the series by focusing not just on biblical books, but also on the challenge of preaching the great doctrines of the faith. Teaching the Christian Hope is therefore offered in order to encourage lively Bible teaching about eschatology, the future hope that lies at the heart of the whole message of the gospel.
The hallmark of the series is that each book aims not merely to teach the readers the truth of God from Scripture, but also to offer real help towards them teaching this truth to others, through opening the Bible themselves. Though principally aimed at preachers who are preparing expository sermons, our hope is that Bible teachers in a variety of settings will gain practical help from the approach. To this end, each chapter is clearly divided into ‘teachable’ sections, with headings and sub-headings arranged suggestively for main teaching points or whole expositions. We trust that ...
About Teaching the Christian Hope: Unlocking Biblical Eschatology for the Expositor
This is a book for Bible teachers, about dealing with what are often regarded as difficult and controversial areas of Scripture and therefore have tended to be avoided or ignored. It is not a comprehensive survey of all the issues bound up in the study of biblical eschatology, nor does it seek to answer the many tantalizing questions the subject matter raises for our curiosity. This is a practical book, to stimulate Bible teachers to want to teach the Christian hope, and to give a few preliminary suggestions and ideas about how one might go about it. As such, it may prove helpful not only to pulpit preachers, but also to Bible-study group leaders, youth workers and even Sunday-school teachers, for teaching about eschatology is certainly under-represented in many of our programs, across the strata of contemporary evangelical church life.
There are six major themes connected with the Christian hope in the future. Each chapter uses one or two key passages that explain one of the major themes of eschatology and then covers the main elements that need to be answered within that theme.
