Commentaries and General Works on Luke’s Gospel

Commentaries on the text of Luke’s gospel are many and varied. Some of the following are specifically based on the English text, some on the Greek; however, most of the latter can be studied profitably by those without a knowledge of Greek, while several of those ostensibly based on the English text refer to Greek at times. No attempt has therefore been made in what follows to divide the commentaries into two lists. All the secondary literature cited here is restricted to works written in English.

G.B. Caird, The Gospel of St Luke (Pelican New Testament Commentaries; Harmondsworth: Penguin Books, 1963).

J.M. Creed, The Gospel according to St Luke (Macmillan: London, 1930). A classic study based on the Greek text.

E.E. Ellis, The Gospel of Luke (New Century Bible; London: Marshall, Morgan & Scott, 1974). Based on the English text and of medium length: careful and thorough exegesis.

C.F. Evans, Saint Luke (TPI New Testament Commentaries; London: SCM Press, 1990). Based on the English text. Very long and detailed.

J.A. Fitzmyer, The Gospel according to Luke (Anchor Bible; 2 vols.; Doubleday: New York, 1981, 1985). An extremely thorough and invaluable treatment, with a monograph length introduction on Luke. A standard work.

M.D. Goulder, LukeA New Paradigm (JSNTSup, 20; Sheffield: JSOT Press, 1989). In the form of a commentary, ...

About Luke

In Luke, Tuckett discusses the authorship, date and text of the Gospel. With the main focus in this guide on Luke’s view of eschatology—salvation history—and the person and work of Jesus, Tuckett also tackles Luke’s positions on Jews, Gentiles and Judaism. Departing from Luke’s theology, the book concentrates on the concrete ideas set forth in the Gospel regarding the Christian life and practice. One major theme prominent in Luke concerns poverty and riches, and Tuckett spends a chapter on the subject.
