The Book of Hebrews
Purpose: To introduce Hebrews and its central theme—the new covenant.
INTRODUCTION
God brought a wonderful new covenant through Jesus. Because Jesus is so closely linked to the covenant, he is called the “covenant” in Isaiah 42:6 and 49:8. Hebrews cites a number of Old Testament passages to show and explain how Jesus established God’s new covenant with all of God’s people, Jews and Gentiles alike. If we can understand what Hebrews teaches about the new covenant, we will be well on our way to understanding the book of Hebrews as a whole.
Proposition: God invites all people into relationship with him through the superior covenant established by Jesus.
I. THE NEW COVENANT IS SUPERIOR TO THE OLD COVENANT MEDIATED BY MOSES (HEBREWS 8).
A. According to Hebrews 8, the new covenant is superior to the old one in various ways. To prove this point, the author of Hebrews quotes and explains Jeremiah 31:31–34, where God first revealed his intention to establish a new covenant with his people.
B. Jeremiah 31 teaches that the new covenant will be superior to the old covenant made between God and Israel at Mount Sinai in several key respects: (1) the new covenant will link Israel and Judah again into one; ...
